In an unexpected turn of events, the Minecraft Movie became one of the biggest hits in cinemas during 2025. Now, this fantasy-adventure-comedy film is easily accessible as it will be just a click away. Directed by Jared Hess, the movie has scheduled its premiere on Max for June 20, with an HBO release following on June 21 at 8 pm ET. Subscribers of HBO Max can start streaming the film from these dates. The movie is based on the widely popular Mojang Studios game, which has gained immense popularity since its debut in 2011.
What is A Minecraft Movie About?
The narrative centers around Steve, portrayed by Jack Black, struggling with issues in his doorknob enterprise, and Garrett “The Trash Collector” Garrison, played by Jason Momoa, a video game shop owner, who unexpectedly meet in the Overworld. They devise a plan to battle monsters in an attempt to return to reality. Alongside them are siblings Sebastian Hansen as Henry and Emma Myers as Natalie, and real estate agent Danielle Brooks as Dawn, who assist them in defeating Malgosha, the swine sovereign of the Nether – a demonic realm within the same cosmic block.
As a dedicated follower, I’m thrilled to share that “A Minecraft Movie,” launched on April 4, has shone brightly in the global cinema landscape, raking in an astounding $951 million at the box office and claiming the title of the highest-grossing release of 2025. Not only that, but it’s sitting comfortably among the top two game adaptations, slightly behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which graced our screens two years prior.
In a year where cinema struggled to find its footing, A Minecraft Movie became a beacon of hope. With talented actors like Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen on board, we welcomed the overwhelmingly positive response to our film with open arms.
The movie was developed by Allison Schroeder, Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta, with all of them contributing to its screenplay as well. It’s reported that a staggering $150 million was spent on its production, but it more than made back that investment after an incredibly profitable run at the box office.
