LuckyChap and Wattpad Webtoon Studios are joining forces to bring the popular webcomic Stagtown to life on the big screen with a live-action adaptation. The movie will be helmed by Benjamin Brewer, an accomplished director who has previously worked as a visual effects artist on the critically acclaimed film Everything Everywhere All At Once. Brewer’s impressive resume also includes directing the film Arcadian, which made its debut at SXSW in 2024, and co-writing projects such as Reptile and The Trust.
According to Punko’s webcomic, Stagtown has amassed over 18 million views and grown in popularity due to its chilling narrative and haunting artwork. The storyline revolves around Frankie, Jeremy, and Felix as they unearth the disturbing mysteries hidden within Stagtown, a town where inhabitants appear intent on overlooking the terrors lurking nearby.
Jason Goldberg, who leads the global film division at Wattpad Webtoon Studios, showcased his enthusiasm for the project by stating, “The captivating horror and intriguing mystery of Punko’s ‘Stagtown’ have seized the internet’s attention. We’re ecstatic to collaborate with LuckyChap and Benjamin Brewer, whose creative vision will produce a horror film that defines a generation.
Previously, Brewer has been involved in music video productions for musicians such as Alt-J and Justin Bieber, and the highly-acclaimed film Arcadian, featuring Nicolas Cage and Jaeden Martell. His ability to harmonize striking visuals with imaginative narratives makes him a suitable choice for this project.
Wattpad Webtoon Studios is broadening its collection of adaptations, featuring “Lore Olympus” with The Jim Henson Company, “Death of a Pop Star” with Diablo Cody, and now adding “Stagtown” to the mix in their expanding list of projects.
