‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Star Fires Back at Racial Criticism Over Tanselle Casting

Tanzyn Crawford has responded to criticism she received for playing the character Tanselle in the HBO series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The show, which is based on stories by George R.R. Martin, tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and his assistant, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), as they compete in tournaments, face dangerous situations, and get involved in the political world of Westeros.

The story centers on the male characters, but there’s a short romance involving Tanselle, a puppeteer, as Dunk clumsily attempts to impress her. Crawford shared with Wonderland that it felt daunting taking on a role so many fans already loved.

She admitted it was daunting joining a project so many people felt passionate about and had strong opinions on. While she did experience some negativity related to her race, she ultimately focused on the fact that she was able to pursue her career goals and make a living doing what she loved.

Crawford revealed that George R.R. Martin, who wrote the original stories, approved of her being cast. He even told her, “You’re exactly what I pictured.”

Crawford described her character, Tanselle, as bringing a gentler, more feminine energy to a story that’s generally tough and focused on men. She explained that Tanselle offers a welcome contrast to the show’s often brutal and masculine tone, possessing a quiet confidence and independent interests beyond her connection to the character Dunk. Tanselle, according to Crawford, has her own life and passions that set her apart.

Okay, so Tanselle isn’t in “The Sworn Sword,” the second Dunk & Egg story, but everyone’s buzzing that she’s down in Dorne, and I’m thinking that’s definitely going to matter later on. It feels like George R.R. Martin is leaving the possibility open for her to show up again and impact what Ser Duncan does next. It’s a clever little tease, honestly.
