The John Wick franchise’s attempts to create spinoffs haven’t been very successful up to this point. The series on Peacock, focusing on the Continental Hotel in the 1970s, didn’t generate much excitement. And, Ballerina wasn’t a hit with either audiences or critics, and it didn’t perform well in theaters. Despite this, there are plans for another John Wick spinoff – a script is reportedly finished for a samurai Western set within this universe.
The news surfaced in a Variety article highlighting promising writers, including Austin Everett, who briefly noted that he had written the script. That’s certainly noteworthy! He added that he was unable to share further details, which is understandable. The idea behind this story has the potential to stretch far back in time. However, does the John Wick franchise still draw interest when Keanu Reeves isn’t the main star? It’s a possibility.
There’s growing interest in a story centered around Caine, and fans haven’t forgotten about Halle Berry’s Sofia – many would welcome a project featuring her character. However, those characters connected with audiences in a unique way. While a story that doesn’t involve John Wick’s journey – even something intriguing like a Western samurai tale – might not be the best approach. We’ll have to see how things develop with this.
