As a long-time Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel like Mephisto, the Devil of the Marvel Universe, has been playing a cruel game of cat and mouse with us. With each new film or series, my heart skips a beat every time I spot a hint of red or a shadowy figure that could potentially be him.
It’s now official that Mephisto, Marvel Comics’ representation of the Devil, is part of the MCU, as confirmed by Agatha All Along. Jennifer Kale hinted at a possible “Mephisto agent,” explicitly using his name in canon. This brings us back to 2021 when many fans anticipated Mephisto’s appearance, first in WandaVision and later in other MCU projects due to his strong connection with Wanda Maximoff and her twins in the comics. Given these ties, it was reasonable to expect his presence. However, Mephisto remained elusive, never making an appearance. Now that he’s been confirmed (as existing), let’s revisit the instances when we thought the MCU was subtly hinting at Mephisto in the past. And there were indeed numerous times we got caught up in the Mephisto speculation.
“The Devil’s in the Details” Dottie Jones Is Mephisto
The first instance where fans began to suspect Mephisto as the hidden villain in “WandaVision” occurred in episode two. While they were still within a black-and-white “Bewitched” type scenario, Dottie Jones (Emma Caulfield), portrayed as a prominent figure in Westview managing the town’s affairs, dropped a hint during a party planning session by saying, “The Devil’s in the details.” Following this comment, Agnes subtly told Wanda, “That’s not the only place he is.” This led some viewers to speculate that Dottie could be Mephisto himself, also known as the Devil. Given Emma Caulfield’s previous role as a demon on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” her casting was seen as a possible clue. However, it was later revealed that Dottie, whose true name is Sarah Proctor, was merely another citizen of Westview ensnared in Wanda’s hex.
“Unleash Hell, Demon Spawn!” Evan Peters’ Pietro Is Really Mephisto
Despite our hope that Evan Peters’ character “Fake Pietro” would turn out to be Quicksilver from the X-Men films as suggested earlier, it turned out he was just Ralph Bohner under Agatha Harkness’ spell. This marked the beginning of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, yet they didn’t explore this concept for that particular plot point. Some fans speculated that “Fake Pietro” could have been Mephisto himself, given his reference to Wanda’s children as “demon spawn” in the Halloween episode. Many believed this was a literal nod to comics where Wanda created Billy and Tommy from shards of Mephisto’s soul. However, it turned out that “Fake Pietro” was neither Quicksilver nor Mephisto.
A Secret A-List Actor Will Play Mephisto in the WandaVision Finale
As the finale of “WandaVision” drew near, its star Paul Bettany mentioned during an interview that there was one more major surprise coming up. He hinted at working with an actor he had never collaborated with before, expressing his eagerness for this new experience. This fueled speculation among fans that a top-tier actor (possibly Al Pacino) would portray Mephisto, serving as the main antagonist. However, it turned out that the actor Bettany was referring to was none other than himself, with “Westview Vision” and “White Vision” clashing in the series finale. Regrettably, Mephisto (and Al Pacino) did not make an appearance.
Mephisto Is the Main Villain in Spider-Man: No Way Home
As a gamer, I was hyped for WandaVision’s ending, hoping it would finally unveil Mephisto. But alas, the series closed without him. Yet, the Mephisto theories continued to thrive, particularly with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in late 2021. The tumultuous end of Far From Home saw Peter Parker’s identity exposed worldwide, causing chaos in his life. In the comics, during a similar predicament, Peter made a pact with a devilish figure – Mephisto – to erase the world’s knowledge of his true identity, at the cost of his marriage to Mary Jane. Even the official poster hinted at Mephisto’s presence. However, in the actual film, it was Doctor Strange who cast the spell, not Mephisto. Once more, our hopes for seeing the big red devil were crushed as he remained elusive.
Mephisto is the Big Bad of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Before the Doctor Strange sequel, titled “Multiverse of Madness,” premiered in 2022, it was already known to have undergone several changes. Its initial director, Scott Derickson, departed from the project, taking with him the original villain, Nightmare. At one point, there were rumors that Mephisto would replace Nightmare since Scarlet Witch was part of the film. Many fans speculated that this could lead to a showdown between Wanda and Mephisto. However, in the end, those theories proved unfounded as “Multiverse of Madness” did not feature such a confrontation. Despite this disappointment, there’s still hope that Nightmare will appear in future installments.
Ironheart Will Finally Reveal Mephisto in the Flesh in the MCU
As a devoted fan, I’ve got a fun little theory to share that predates the official confirmation of Mephisto in the MCU. Even though Agatha All Along confirmed his existence, my initial hypothesis hasn’t been debunked yet. With the upcoming Ironheart series delving into the conflict between technology and mysticism, it’s fascinating to consider Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) as the tech representative and Anthony Ramos’ character, the Hood, as the supernatural one.
