This year celebrates 60 years of Star Trek, a truly iconic and long-lasting television franchise. While the show has faced breaks in the past, it looks like another one might be coming. Both Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds finished filming their seasons this year, and Strange New Worlds won’t be returning for another. According to TrekMovie, this is the first time since 2016 that no Star Trek series is currently being made, planned, or even approved. With Strange New Worlds’ fifth season completed, that show has ended, and the future of Starfleet Academy after its second season is uncertain. Could this mean the end of the current era of Star Trek on Paramount+?
A few years ago, it looked like Star Trek was doing really well on streaming, with shows like Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. We even got the first animated Trek series in a long time with Lower Decks and Prodigy. Discovery lasted five seasons, and Picard ran for its planned three. However, when Lower Decks and Prodigy were cancelled unexpectedly, and Strange New Worlds received a shortened final season, it felt like something was shifting. For years, the creative direction of Star Trek was led by Secret Hideout, the production company of Alex Kurtzman, who has been involved with Trek since the 2009 movie reboot. Now that Skydance has taken ownership of Paramount, are they planning a new path for the franchise? Kurtzman says he’s not done with Star Trek, but it’s unclear if the ultimate decision is his to make.
Star Trek has faced gaps in its television releases before. For example, there wasn’t a live-action Star Trek show on TV from 1970 to 1986, though several successful movies were made during that time. More recently, after Enterprise ended in 2005, it took over ten years for a new series, Discovery, to premiere in 2016. The real question isn’t if Star Trek will return to television, but when and in what form, and who will lead the project. While current concerns might be premature – Starfleet Academy could be renewed for another season – and a rumored series based on Strange New Worlds might be in development, Paramount (now owned by Skydance) isn’t currently signaling any immediate plans for the future of Star Trek on TV. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long for news.
