As a seasoned horror enthusiast with an eye for emerging talent, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming collaboration between Chloe Okuno and Maika Monroe in the chilling new film ‘Brides.’ Okuno’s knack for crafting suspenseful stories, demonstrated by her gripping segment ‘Storm Drain’ and her acclaimed directorial debut ‘Watcher,’ has me on the edge of my seat.
Chloe Okuno may not be widely recognized yet, but her skillful creation of suspenseful horror narratives, evident through her work as both a writer and director of the notable segment ‘Storm Drain’ in the anthology V/H/S/94, is propelling her swiftly towards recognition.
Her first full-length movie, titled ‘Watcher’, made its premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and garnered significant recognition. It was subsequently distributed by IFC Midnight and Shudder. Moreover, she had previously demonstrated her prowess with the critically acclaimed short film ‘Slut’ (2014), which earned numerous awards, thereby showcasing her talent at an early stage in her career.
Currently, Okuno is working on a chilling new horror film titled ‘Brides’, featuring Maika Monroe in the lead role. This project represents their third joint venture between Neon and Maika Monroe. The production will be overseen by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu through Likely Story. Pre-production is already underway, with filming scheduled for March. Upon completion, Neon will manage the cinematic distribution of the movie.

2022 saw Monroe taking on the role of Julia in Chloe Okuno’s directorial debut, the psychological thriller ‘Watcher.’ The following year, she appeared as Case in the action thriller ‘God Is a Bullet,’ an adaptation of a 1999 novel. In 2024, she was Lee Harker in the horror film ‘Longlegs,’ starring alongside Nicolas Cage. She found this part particularly unique and transformative, and the movie turned out to be the highest-grossing independent feature of that year.
The movie ‘Brides’ is adapted from Okuno’s initial screenplay. This story revolves around Sally Bishop, portrayed by Monroe, and her spouse, who find themselves at a secluded Italian villa. The enigmatic owner of the villa, Count so-and-so, seems to take an uncommon liking towards Sally.
In a deal facilitated by Jeff Deutchman and Jason Wald, Neon acquired the distribution rights for ‘Brides’. Meanwhile, FilmNation Entertainment took charge of international sales during the American Film Market in Las Vegas, while UTA Independent Film Group handled both global and domestic rights for this film.
