As a seasoned gamer who has traversed countless virtual realms and epic sagas, I can confidently say that the prospect of a Beren and Lúthien movie has sent my heart racing like a wild steed across Rohan’s plains. The tale of these star-crossed lovers, immortalized in the annals of Middle-earth, has long been a beacon of hope, love, and adventure that resonates deeply within me.
The universe of “The Lord of the Rings” is expanding, with “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” now brought to life as an anime series, focusing on the story of Rohan. Next up, we have “The Hunt for Gollum,” which promises to reintroduce everyone’s favorite creepy character. However, this might just be the start. Recently, TopMob had the opportunity to interview long-time collaborator of Percy Jackson, Philippa Boyens, who has been involved in numerous “The Lord of the Rings” films. When asked about her dream Tolkien story to adapt, Boyens mentioned one that she’s particularly keen on: a “The Lord of the Rings” movie centered around the tale of Beren and Lúthien. And we must admit, we’d be equally excited for that too.
Here’s what The Lord of the Rings‘ Boyens shared about her dream Beren and Lúthien movie:
Absolutely, the idea of creating a movie based on “The Lord of the Rings,” specifically focusing on Beren and Lúthien’s story, has always captivated me. I find this tale truly extraordinary, serving as an origin for many subsequent events. However, I am aware of the estate’s considerations, and it might be other talented individuals who will eventually bring this story to life. If they do, I would eagerly wait to watch their adaptation.
As a die-hard fan of Middle Earth, I wholeheartedly echo what Boyens expressed – a Beren and Lúthien movie is long overdue! This captivating love story, as Boyens points out, is the most enchanting, most romantic tale in the realm of Lord of the Rings. It lays the groundwork for so much that unfolds later in this world, and countless other relationships echo its themes. A Beren and Lúthien film seems like an intuitive decision when considering new Lord of the Rings movies. However, I acknowledge that movie-making is a labyrinthine endeavor.
The story of Beren and Lúthien is one of the three Great Tales of Tolkien’s Legendarium. Tolkien himself considered it to be one of the most important stories of The Lord of the Rings‘ world. While there is deep nuance to the tale, the crux of it is that Beren is a mortal man and Lúthien an immortal elf, and so, of course, their romance is steeped in the specter of tragedy. But beyond the trials of their love, Beren and Lúthien are also part of the story of the Dark Lord Morgoth, who rose before Sauron, and the powerful Silmarils, which he stole from the elves. I think we can already see how a Beren and Lúthien movie would be one worth tuning in for. Love, adventure, danger, what more could you want in a film?
It’s clear Boyens loves the subject matter, so we’d fully support her getting to tell this great tale. But as Boyens herself notes, whoever does make the Beren and Lúthien movie, we’ll be seated to see it.
