A 4K IMAX Restoration of PRINCESS MONONOKE Is Coming to Theaters

For the first time since its debut in 1997, Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning film “Princess Mononoke” is returning to theaters, this time in IMAX format. To mark Studio Ghibli’s 40th anniversary, a fresh 4K restoration of “Princess Mononoke” will be shown in North American cinemas. And as an added bonus, another classic film from the past, “Revenge of the Sith,” is also being re-released to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

In case you need a little refresher on the plot for this film, here’s a quick synopsis:

Under the weight of a fatal spell, the young warrior Ashitaka embarks on a journey westward in pursuit of healing. Along the way, he unwittingly becomes entangled in a fierce dispute between Lady Eboshi, the determined inhabitants of Iron Town, and the mysterious Mononoke Princess, a wolf-reared girl who will go to great lengths to protect her forest home and the divine spirits and animal deities residing there.

Hayao Miyazaki, a key figure in Studio Ghibli’s establishment, penned the tale behind the hand-drawn animated movie “Princess Mononoke.” This production was overseen by another Studio Ghibli co-founder, Toshio Suzuki. Notably, Joe Hisaishi, often working alongside Miyazaki, created the film’s soundtrack, much like he has for many other Studio Ghibli productions.

Atsushi Okui personally supervised the development of the IMAX edition of Princess Mononoke, employing a unique 4K restoration process for the movie. Since Porco Rosso, Okui has been involved in nearly every Studio Ghibli production as a cinematographer. The re-release of Princess Mononoke hits theaters on March 26.
