The latest “Superman” film from Warner Bros. and DC Studios kicked off with a powerful performance at worldwide box offices during its opening weekend, amassing $217 million in total earnings. Of that amount, an impressive $122 million was made within the U.S. borders. Although it’s not their biggest production this year, it marks a promising beginning for the revamped DC universe.
Based on TheWrap’s report, the movie’s U.S. earnings fell squarely within the predicted range, which was roughly between $115 and $135 million. To give you an idea, James Gunn’s previous film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, earned $118 million in its debut weekend, while The Batman opened with a staggering $133 million.
As a movie critic, allow me to compare the opening box office numbers of two Superman films: “Man of Steel” (2013) and James Gunn’s yet-to-be-released Superman flick. While “Man of Steel” impressively raked in $116 million domestically upon its release, it fell short of toppling the opening domestic earnings of “Batman v Superman” (2016), which roared into theaters with an impressive $166 million.
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that the latest Superman film is creating quite a stir among both fans and critics! Rotten Tomatoes has given it an impressive 82% critic score and a staggering 94% audience rating. PostTrak even awarded it an 86% positive score, which is on par with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel from 2013 that received an A- grade from CinemaScore – just like this new film! However, it’s worth noting that Man of Steel had a slightly stronger opening with $128 million. Still, I can hardly wait to see how this new adventure unfolds on the big screen!
Due to positive feedback, the movie is expected to maintain its success, despite Marvel’s The Fantastic 4: First Steps premiering in cinemas in just two weeks. This upcoming film has been generating buzz online, and it’s possible that some superhero enthusiasts might decide to watch both movies. There’s a possibility that the renewed excitement could draw some viewers back for another look at Superman.
In a different part of the world, Superman didn’t quite reach peak altitude. It earned approximately $95 million from 78 countries, which is less than expected. Experts suggest that the success of Jurassic World: Rebirth may have played a role in this. That movie made $68 million abroad and $40 million in the U.S. during its second weekend. It has now surpassed $529 million globally.
Dinosaurs, it seems, are still a bigger draw than the Man of Steel in many parts of the world.
Nonetheless, it’s anticipated that Superman will effortlessly surpass $300 million in the U.S., placing it as the third film this year to achieve such a feat.
