28 Years Later Ending Explained: What is the Jimmy Savile Connection in Danny Boyle’s Thrilling Sequel

28 Years After has now hit cinemas, and enthusiasts of the series can’t wait to see Danny Boyle’s enchantment once more. This new film serves as a sequel to the original 28 Days Later from 2002, disregarding the events of its follow-up, 28 Weeks Later, which was released in 2007.

Regarding the latest film, it’s packed with intense scenes involving zombies and copious amounts of blood. However, what sets it apart is the finale, where all the unsettling aspects converge, including a reference to Jimmy Savile.

28 Years Later Ending Explained

At the closing moments of 28 Years Later, Spike – the free-roaming 12-year-old character – encounters an unsettling group led by Jimmy, played by Jack O’Connell. In a surprising turn of events, this cult’s members disguise themselves as Jimmy Savile, a popular British TV host, by donning shells and a blonde wig.

The film ends mysteriously, hinting at a sequel series titled “Bone Temple,” which is scheduled to debut as part of a 28 Years Later trilogy in January 2026.

After the movie’s premiere, director Danny Boyle shared insights on the ending. He clarified that Jack O’Connell’s character and his family serve as a sort of substitute for the one he loses at the start of the film. Their presence is meant to reintroduce wickedness into an otherwise empathetic setting.

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but eagerly ask Alex Garland at the outset to reveal the essence of each movie he was crafting. With a knowing smile, he divulged that the core of the first film revolves around family. The second film, however, delves into the very nature of evil. He hinted that there would be many more intriguing details to discuss about these themes in due time, once we’ve encountered them more fully in the second film.

In the next movie, you’ll see Jimmy taking on the lead role, while Cillian Murphy’s character from the first film, Jim, makes his return.
