Despite some hiccups, the Star Wars series is brimming with upcoming films. Among these, Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu” has been confirmed for a theater release on May 22, 2026, leading the pack.
At the moment, projects helmed by directors such as Shawn Levy, James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Taika Waititi are being worked on, causing excitement among fans who are anxiously awaiting news about their progress.
Currently, a range of projects led by talented directors including Shawn Levy, James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Taika Waititi are underway, with fans eagerly anticipating updates on their production status.
Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie, originally called “Starfighter,” is generating interest. Known for his work on Deadpool and Wolverine, Levy started discussions to direct in 2022, according to Deadline. The project’s development was halted during the 2023 writers’ strike but resumed afterward.
By July 2024, it was made official that Jonathan Tropper, a collaborator with Levy on “The Adam Project,” would serve as the scriptwriter. In early 2025, word spread that Ryan Gosling might take on the lead role, increasing the project’s importance. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, shared that the movie is set “five to six years after The Rise of Skywalker,” making it a significant sequel in the storyline.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that James Mangold’s upcoming project, provisionally titled “Jedi Prime,” is progressing steadily. This film will herald a fresh beginning, the Dawn of the Jedi era, promising an epic, sweeping narrative reminiscent of classic biblical cinematography.
Mangold received this exciting opportunity while immersed in Indiana Jones and the Crystal of Fate, and he’s now teaming up with Beau Willimon, a writer from Andor, as of April 2024. Simon Emanuel, the producer, subtly hinted at the title in May.
While Mangold skillfully juggles other projects, such as a Bob Dylan biopic and a script for DC’s Swamp Thing, it’s evident that Jedi Prime holds a significant place in his creative vision. I can hardly wait to see this masterpiece unfold on the big screen!
Despite initial plans, the movie centered around Rey appears to be encountering delays. According to insider Daniel Richtman, who shared his insights on Patreon, the project has been put on hold temporarily, but it’s not yet been canceled. The departure of its original scriptwriter and subsequent changes in writers have caused a bit of turmoil, with little progress reported so far. Additionally, the connection to a new trilogy led by Simon Kinberg remains unclear, creating some ambiguity about Rey’s future within the franchise at this point.
As The Mandalorian and Grogu, along with productions by Levy and Mangold, move forward, initiatives from Filoni and Waititi are still in their initial phases. The Star Wars universe is growing, yet certain tales are developing at a slower pace.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to see the Star Wars universe expanding with innovative tales such as Starfighter and Jedi Prime. Having talents like Levy and Mangold on board certainly adds to the anticipation. However, it’s unfortunate that we’re still waiting for Rey’s movie, a sequel that her character truly deserves following The Rise of Skywalker.
