James Gunn has exciting visions for the DC Universe, although he’s keeping some details under wraps at the moment. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn revealed sneak peeks into what we can expect in the upcoming DCU. While many fans are aware that Superman will lead off the new series, Gunn hinted there might be additional secrets brewing behind the scenes – even some information he hasn’t disclosed to top executives at Warner Bros yet.
Following the production of “Guardians of the Galaxy” for Marvel, Gunn shifted to DC, currently collaborating with Peter Safran. Their initial significant film within the new DC Universe is “Superman,” set for release on July 11.
I’m thrilled about this new take on the classic tale! In this version, it seems like David Corenswet will be stepping into the iconic role of Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult bringing Lex Luthor to life. Can’t wait to see how they breathe new life into these beloved characters!
However, there’s another project Gunn is passionately engaged in, one that excites him more than any other. He hinted at a new TV show in the pipeline, which he regards as his favorite project so far. Yet, he didn’t disclose the details, but he did confirm it’s not something that has been made public yet. Interestingly, he intentionally withheld mentioning this project during his initial pitch to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, fearing someone might attempt to replicate it.
From the start, there was a particular concept I shared with David Zaslav regarding the DCU. Although I presented it during our initial meeting, we didn’t make it public then because I thought it could be easily copied by another company. This is one of the key points I’m referring to.
Currently, Gunn is wrapping up season 2 of Peacemaker, stating that it will be completed simultaneously with the editing and sound for Superman. He also shared that Lanterns, a new HBO series, has reached the halfway point in filming and is expected to air its early episodes soon. Supergirl has already finished filming, while Clayface is gearing up for production.
It’s been revealed that he’s working on multiple other projects. One of them is nearly completed, while another is still in its early stages. Additionally, he has a secret project underway which has not been disclosed yet. This may be his next film to direct.
I often express my intention to direct a project after writing the script, but it’s not until I’m finished that I decide for sure. To put it bluntly, it’s likely that this is what I will end up directing.
Although “Superman” hasn’t been released in cinemas as of now, Gunn has already started contemplating what follows next. When questioned about a potential sequel, he indicated that the idea is floating around in his head, but perhaps not in the manner that one might anticipate.
What I’m currently working on can be described as…well, yes, yes, yes, yes. However, it’s not exactly a direct Superman sequel.
As an ardent supporter, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation as we eagerly await the return of our beloved Superman to the skies. Yet, it seems there’s much more in store for us, and rumors hint at a secret project that could potentially rewrite the narrative entirely.
