Voice Actor Charles Martinet Will Still Perform Mario Voice for Fans, Despite Rumors

For three decades, Charles Martinet lent his voice to the character Mario across numerous Nintendo games. Upon his retirement as the voice of Mario in 2023 and being replaced by Kevin Afghani, Nintendo acknowledged him as an official Mario Ambassador. Fans adore Martinet due to his habit of using his signature Mario voice when meeting fans in person. However, through IGN, we’ve learned that there were some worries about Martinet not being allowed to fully embody Mario at conventions by Nintendo staff. Yet, it seems this is not entirely accurate. Instead, Martinet has opted to stick to the script when voicing Mario in public settings.

In a post, Martinet shared that he provides the voice for every Mario fan he encounters, but he doesn’t spontaneously use phrases or dialogues that aren’t from the games. He emphasized that this decision was entirely his own, not something imposed by Nintendo. He simply felt it was important to stay true to the character and its origins. “I make this choice to preserve the character’s integrity,” he said. “Stop by at any Comic Con or fan event, and you’ll undoubtedly hear Super Mario!

Charles Martinet isn’t just known for giving Mario his voice; he also lends his talents to characters like Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi, among others. Essentially, he’s the main voice actor behind the entire Mario universe. However, if you run into Martinet at a convention, don’t expect him to speak anything outside of what fans are accustomed to Mario saying. After all, that’s probably exactly what a dedicated Super Mario fan would anticipate! But let me clarify, if you’re hoping to hear Martinet use profanity in his Mario voice, it’s best not to expect it.
