In 2019, few video games generated as much pre-release excitement as Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding. Now, six years later, its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is set to debut in stores on June 26. However, fans of the franchise have even more reasons to be thrilled this month. Following the announcement of a live-action adaptation featuring the game’s cast comes news of another film project. Aaron Guzikowski, writer of Raised by Wolves, is penning a screenplay for an animated movie set within the universe of Death Stranding.
Kojima Productions and animation studio Line Mileage have revealed their collaboration on an adult-oriented Death Stranding animated film (originally reported by Deadline). Unlike a direct adaptation of game storylines, this movie will present an entirely new narrative instead.
At present, there’s no film director confirmed for the project. However, Guzikowski has made a name for himself with screenplays such as “Prisoners” (2013) and the 2017 remake of “Papillon”. In a statement, Guzikowski expressed his enthusiasm about working on “Death Stranding”, praising its creative freedom, dark yet hopeful atmosphere, and being honored to collaborate with Hideo Kojima, whose work he has long admired.
In the realm of video games, Death Stranding – known for its intricate storytelling and gameplay that some players found complex or paced slowly – might not initially appear as the prime candidate for a single film adaptation, let alone two. However, Kojima’s open-world journey is brimming with potential to narrate fresh tales. This unique, supernatural world where a chain of enigmatic blasts connect the living and the deceased presents a wealth of material for exploration.
If the initial two movies successfully embody what fans adore from the video game, it’s likely that there will be more follow-ups.
