The Donkey Kong Bananza Direct shows the game looking utterly bananas

Nintendo has concluded its Nintendo Direct presentation for Donkey Kong Bananza, and let me tell you, this game appears to be utterly exhilarating! Contrasting the initial unveiling of the game, which seemed quite basic, it seems that Donkey Kong Bananza will be one of Nintendo’s most significant and innovative titles in recent years.

In the initial preview, it was evident that the game primarily focused on destructible terrains and environments. This emphasis appears to remain consistent in the current version. Donkey Kong is capable of breaking through most obstacles, creating craters in the scenery and hurling stones at adversaries to vanquish them. However, there’s also a greater layer of complexity added to the system these days.

Beyond just demolishing landscapes, DK now has the ability to construct structures using gentler terrain as well. For instance, he can build a bridge over a chasm or ride on a giant rock similar to surfing with a shield in Breath of the Wild. As you advance through the game, you’ll discover a variety of skills that let you interact more creatively with the environment – an interesting addition given that this type of game is not typically known for its RPG elements.

As a gamer, I’ve been intrigued by this little purple rock named Odd Rock since it first appeared alongside DK in the trailer. But guess what? In the recent Direct, it turns out that Odd Rock is none other than a young Pauline in disguise! She’s set to join forces with the leader of the DK Crew, using her powerful singing voice to guide our ape friend through their upcoming adventure. This twist raises some interesting questions about Donkey Kong lore. We don’t know yet if this is a younger version of our old Pauline friend with a revised timeline, a descendant, or even the de-aged Mayor Pauline – we’ll just have to wait and see how it unfolds in the game!

Pauline’s enchanting vocals enable Donkey Kong to undergo extraordinary metamorphoses, such as the mighty Kong Bananza form that increases his size and strength, a zebra shape capable of running at speeds fast enough to traverse oceans without sinking, and an ostrich shape for flying through the sky. The variety here is truly astounding, and there’s definitely more to uncover. We didn’t even touch on the game’s Breath of the Wild-like shrines and 2D platforming levels, so you’ll need to watch the entire Direct presentation to catch everything this game has in store.

Donkey Kong Bananza will be released exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17, 2025.
