DC Boss Says No One Tops James Gunn: ‘Greatest Superhero Filmmaker of Our Generation’

This week, Warner Bros created quite an impact at CineEurope by unveiling their forthcoming Superman film, scheduled for release in July. For the first time, Jeff Goldstein, the President of Global Theatrical Distribution, shared the studio’s international strategies during this gathering.

The highlight was 30 minutes of exclusive footage from the new DC film, leaving attendees buzzing.

In the film, David Corenswet takes on the role of Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult embodies Lex Luthor.

The video contained segments that were initially displayed at CinemaCon back in April, along with new, unseen content for the very first time. To kick things off, a local musician played a lively electric guitar version of the famous Superman theme, instantly pumping up the audience.

Due to a worldwide promotional tour commencing in the Philippines, James Gunn and Peter Safran couldn’t be present. However, they delivered a video message instead. In this message, Safran underscored the film’s significance by referring to it as the cornerstone of a fresh DC Universe.

In praising terms, Safran commended Gunn, responsible for writing and directing the film, stating, “In my opinion, James is the most outstanding superhero movie creator of our era.” Furthermore, Safran expressed, “I wouldn’t embark on any character without James. However, it was when he phoned me and said, ‘I have a plan,’ that I truly felt we were on to something special.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m captivated by how this narrative delves into Superman’s intricate dual identity – the struggle between his alien roots and human upbringing. Safran’s insight resonates deeply: “It strikes a chord about what shapes us into the individuals we are today.

In the narrative, I’m introduced early in my career at the Daily Planet, having been dating Lois Lane for roughly three months. Metropolis, where superheroes, villains, robots, and magic are as ordinary as coffee shops, feels akin to casually crossing paths with a celebrity; it’s more of an exhilarating, “Wow, that’s neat!” moment rather than a baffling, “What on earth did I just witness?” experience, as Safran eloquently put it.

In his discussion, Safran emphasized the exceptional casting of Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent and Brosnahan as Lois Lane, stating, “There was absolutely no question that David Corenswet embodied exactly what we were seeking in Superman and Clark Kent.” He went on to say that when they read together, each actor enhanced the other’s performance. It was as if he said, “That’s Lois Lane!” Safran also made it clear that the movie focuses on both Superman and Lois Lane, with Lois playing a crucial part in the storyline.

Moreover, Safran playfully mentioned the upcoming film titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which is due in June 2026 and is helmed by Craig Gillespie. This suggestion implies further thrilling DC productions to come.
