Way back before “Jurassic Park” captivated Gen-X audiences, they were already enchanted by dinosaurs through the live-action Saturday morning series called “Land of the Lost“. This series ran for three seasons from 1974 to 1976 and had a memorable theme song that continues to linger in many minds today. The show centered around a father and his two children who stumbled upon a portal and found themselves stuck in a hidden world teeming with dinosaurs and other unusual creatures, like the reptile-like Sleestak. Now, it appears that Netflix and Legendary Television are planning to revive “Land of the Lost” for a new generation, as reported by “Deadline“. At this point, there is no confirmed showrunner or writer associated with the project.
The classic TV series “Land of the Lost” was one of numerous shows created by the renowned television producers Sid and Marty Krofft. During the early ’70s, their lineup of Saturday Morning live-action shows included “H.R. Pufnstuf,” “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl,” “Lidsville,” and many more. However, it was “Land of the Lost” that truly propelled them to fame. The show continued in syndication for years following its final episode. A revival occurred in the early ’90s, and a live-action comedic film featuring Will Ferrell was released in 2008. Neither the revival nor the film achieved the same level of success as the original. Yet, the idea remains ripe with possibility.
In this upcoming series on Apple TV+, Legendary Television is set to deliver their second dinosaur-focused show, titled Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Notably, the Krofft brothers pioneered dinosaur animation in the past, long before CGI was widely used. Thus, the iconic T-rex “Grumpy” and other dinosaurs were brought to life through stop motion animation. With modern technology, Grumpy and his fellow dinosaurs can now be made even more awe-inspiringly terrifying. Additionally, we’re curious to see if the Sleestacks with their distinctive spooky sounds will leave a lasting impression on a new group of children, much like they did for many of us who grew up watching them.
