Why F1 is the Must-See Sports Movie of the Year!

Throughout my lifetime, I’ve been passionately captivated by sports films. They mean a great deal to me and I approach them with utmost sincerity. Given my ardent affection for them, it is not a casual remark: F1 is undoubtedly one of the finest sports movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

In simpler terms, “F1” resembles the fusion of “The Natural” and “Rush”. This is the highest compliment I could bestow upon it. The film features Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 prodigy who walked away from the circuit after a severe crash many years ago. Thirty years later, his old teammate Javier Bardem’s character, Ruben Cervantes, reaches out to him, hoping to find “the greatest that never was”. Sonny is currently an independent racer, living in a van and reluctant to join any team. Desperate for a win to save his Formula 1 team, Expensify APX, Ruben turns to Sonny in the final nine races of the season, as he faces possible elimination if he fails to secure a victory.

In F1 team F1, Ruben has his top driver, Damson Idris’ character, Joshua Pearce. This young man is highly skilled but seems excessively concerned about his public persona rather than striving for the best in the world. He could benefit from some guidance. APX also boasts Formula 1’s sole female technical director, Kate McKenna, portrayed by Kerry Condon. Like everyone else, she’s eager to demonstrate her worth, but it remains uncertain if the stubborn Sonny is the solution they’re all seeking. He doesn’t appear ready to work as part of a team any more than Joshua is prepared to learn from him.

Absolutely! As the title suggests, F1 embodies familiar sports movie motifs on a high-speed race track. Yet, it manages to avoid feeling overly predictable or cliché, instead presenting an authentic, unforeseeable narrative. Even though the plot follows many classic sports movie patterns, you’ll never guess what happens next. Each race keeps you on the edge of your seat, as it seems anyone could be the winner or loser. This sense of unpredictability is further enhanced by the fact that no character appears to be safe throughout the film. Formula 1 is notorious for its incredible speed and danger, and F1 succeeds in capturing this essence perfectly.

The film F1 is remarkably funny in places and manages to feel authentic due to its sharp script that portrays characters speaking and behaving like real individuals. Sonny, a character who embodies wit and ingenuity, serves as an amusing annoyance. His humor harmonizes effectively with the film’s intense, angry, and melancholic undertones. This movie is both thrilling and engaging, boasting spectacular racing scenes that appear to have been made with a budget of a billion dollars, while still maintaining a sense of reality due to its well-developed characters. F1 transcends the label of being “just” a sports movie; it’s a deeply human tale enveloped in grand spectacle, delivering everything one expects from a summer blockbuster.

The film excels in part due to its leading actors, Idris and Condon, who consistently match up against Pitt and Bardem throughout the movie. Both of these performers are excellent and captivating, with Pitt standing out as the perfectly imperfect Sonny. However, the film wouldn’t be nearly as impressive without the exceptional performances by Idris and Condon. After watching F1, it’s hard not to believe that they should be major stars in their own right.

It’s hard not to feel grateful that Hans Zimmer, who creates fantastic music, is alive at the same time as us. The Formula 1 series has an exceptional score and includes songs from top-notch bands worldwide. Remarkably, it skillfully uses a Queen song without seeming unoriginal. In fact, its integration of the song is flawless, making me wonder if such a feat could still be achieved today!

Initially, I had concerns about the lengthy 156-minute duration of the movie, given that it’s all about racing. However, during the final 30 minutes, my pulse quickened just as much as one of APX’s cars. By the end, I was eager for a replay, reluctant to leave the captivating universe of Formula 1. This film gives the impression that you’re actually journeying around the globe with a genuine Formula 1 team. (Being more of a casual fan, I can’t vouch for its accuracy, but with seven-time champion and legend Lewis Hamilton serving as a producer and appearing in it, I believe the authenticity is assured.)

I’m a fan of sports movies, but often I find myself underwhelmed by them. Few recent additions to this genre are actually worth watching, let alone exceptional. However, I’m eagerly anticipating watching F1 again on the largest IMAX screen possible because it exceeds expectations. It’s not just great; it’s among the best films of its kind that I’ve ever seen.
