As we wrote in our original Stellar Blade PS5 review, the story is a bit rubbish.
To clarify, we found ourselves appreciating the ambiance and certain rhythms, but it seemed overly familiar and veered off course during its duration. However, even games with unremarkable narratives can provide enjoyment, as the instant gratification from gameplay often keeps you engaged until the end credits roll.
During an interview on the Korean site This Is Game, the CEO of Shift Up, Kim Hyung-tae, openly acknowledged that the storyline might appear “thin” or “not as robust” to some players, offering explanations behind this creative decision.
He mentioned that while the fundamental mechanics of the game were finished quite early on, what truly delayed our progress was the creation and implementation of the cutscenes.
In an action-packed video game, scenes where the action pauses (often called cutscenes) are crucial for telling the story. Actions alone can’t fully communicate the whole narrative.
Initially, Hyung-tae mentioned that the team had a lot of diverse cinematic ideas, but ultimately they needed to reduce their grandeur, which unfortunately impacted the storyline negatively.
He explained that the expense of creating cutscenes grew excessive, forcing us to streamline operations by minimizing cutscenes that enriched the storyline and character development beyond the main storyline, for reasons of efficiency.
The developer is wary about incorporating additional cutscenes and cinematics into the current game, as it fears this might diminish the existing player experience. Instead, it’s now concentrating on the sequel, aiming to provide an engaging storyline that will be satisfying to fans.
In the same conversation, Hyung-tae mentioned that they are targeting a 2027 launch, but there might be challenges preventing them from meeting this deadline. However, he assured us that the sequel will indeed showcase an exceptional piece of work.
