‘Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Cinematic Cut’ Debut Marks KVIFF Expansion Into Gaming World

The 59th installment of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is broadening its selection of audiovisual material by debuting it globally, as part of its Special Screenings category. This includes the “cinematic cut” of Warhorse Studios’ widely acclaimed video game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Cinematic Cut, in its initial screening.

It’s a privilege to collaborate with top experts in their respective fields on this innovative project, which significantly advances our long-standing mission of conveying compelling stories in an unprecedented way,” KVIFF artistic director Karel Och stated during the announcement on Tuesday.

Martin Frývadlský, CEO of Warhorse, has expressed his long-held desire to see “Kingdom Come: Deliverance II” on the big screen. He feels that the tale of a blacksmith’s son will resonate with film audiences and hold its own against the high-caliber productions from around the world. Alongside his studio team, he is proud that they can debut their years-long work at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival for the first time.

1403 in the Kingdom of Bohemia: Amidst the turmoil as invaders ravage the land, spreading fear and terror, Henry from Skalitz is on a mission for vengeance over his slain family. As a trusted servant of the rightful king’s allies, he is assigned to accompany Sir Hans Capon on a diplomatic journey. Following an unexpected ambush that brushes them with death, these two young companions set off on a dangerous odyssey, facing numerous trials that challenge their abilities, personalities, and bond.

Daniel Vávra and Petr Pekař are credited as directors of the movie.

Vávra is a Czech professional in screenwriting, directing, and video game design who has been active in gaming for more than two decades. He became well-known as the main writer and director of the game “Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.” Later on, he developed the historical RPG “Kingdom Come: Deliverance,” which garnered acclaim due to its accurate medieval setting, rich narrative, and intricate game mechanics. He then served as both lead writer and director for the sequel, “Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

A former editor and director, Pekař transitioned into the video game industry 10 years ago as a creator of cutscenes – short animated sequences that provide the storyline for games. He’s contributed to projects such as “Mafia III” and “Kingdom Come: Deliverance.” Since 2018, he has served as the cinematic director at Warhorse Studios, overseeing the film department. Under his guidance, more than five hours of cutscenes have been produced to enrich the epic medieval tale of “Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

The grand debut of the movie version of the game is set for July 9th at Karlovy Vary. Prior to this, attendees will have the chance to hear directly from the creators of the game during a KVIFF Talk on the same day.

This year’s edition of the festival in the Czech spa town runs July 4-12.
