James Gunn Cancels Greenlit DC Project: Is Batman: The Brave and the Bold the Victim?

James Gunn has disclosed that a DC project previously given the go-ahead, possibly Andy Muschietti’s Batman film titled “The Brave and the Bold,” has been canceled.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the rumors align with the possibility that Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel he is working on now, will feature a collaboration known as “World’s Finest,” pairing the David Corenswet Man of Steel with the latest DCU Batman.

What does James Gunn say?

Script Wasn’t Good Enough

In his recent chat with Rolling Stone, Gunn shared that despite having approval and full support from all parties, he decided to halt the project due to concerns with the film’s script.

We’ve unfortunately had to cancel a project. There was widespread enthusiasm for creating a film. It was given the green light and was all set to start production. However, the script was not yet finalized. I can’t proceed with a movie when the script isn’t of high quality.

Gunn commended those shows, specifically Supergirl, Green Lanterns, and Clayface, for their “exceptionally excellent” scripts.

While Gunn didn’t name the project, cancellingThe Brave and the Bold fits.

What happened with The Brave and the Bold?

Initially, when the DC Universe’s lineup was unveiled, it became known that Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, would be helming Brave and the Bold. This film was planned to star Batman and his son, Damian Wayne. However, The Flash experienced a massive failure at the box office. Later, Gunn stated that the script wasn’t fully developed, which some interpreted as him not being satisfied with it.

This sparked discussions about whether Gunn was considering replacing Muschietti, or perhaps integrating Robert Pattinson’s Batman character into the DC Universe. Gunn admitted that the notion of Pattinson playing Batman in the DC Universe had indeed been considered.

Later, Muschietti announced that the release of “The Brave and the Bold” had been delayed, and he was currently engaged in a different venture. Simultaneously, Pattinson and Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II” experienced another postponement, now set for 2027.

In contrast to the recent release of “Batman: Part II“, a speculation arose suggesting director Gunn could merge Reeves’ Batman with the fresh DC Universe, alongside David Corenswet’s Superman. This hypothetical scenario would seemingly discontinue “Brave and the Bold“. However, it seems this integration is unlikely to occur, as reports confirm that Reeves’ Batman remains within its individual universe.

Muschietti Says His Batman Is the DCU Batman

In January, Muschietti clarified the rumors and even Gunn’s statements about Threads. He confirmed that his Batman film is indeed part of the DC Universe but distinct from Reeves’ movies.

He clarified that the hold-up was due to scheduling considerations, aiming to prevent conflicts with “The Batman: Part II“, not because it had been terminated.
