According to an inside source named Daniel Richtman, there’s buzz within Marvel Studios about creating a Hercules project for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The specific format, whether it’s a series on Disney+, a special event, or a movie in theaters, hasn’t been definitively decided yet.
Brett Goldstein as Hercules
In the thrilling finale of “Thor: Love and Thunder,” I made a fleeting appearance, portrayed by the talented Brett Goldstein, famously known for his role in “Ted Lasso.” My character was unveiled as the offspring of the mighty Zeus, skillfully played by Russell Crowe. After our intense battle left Zeus’s standing tarnished, I was assigned with the formidable task of pursuing Thor.
Goldstein shared with The Playlist following the release of Love and Thunder that Marvel unexpectedly approached him for a role and gave him just two weeks to get in shape. He told director Taika Waititi, “Look, I’m essentially a skinny comedian,” to which Waititi responded about the filming schedule, “It’s in two weeks.” Goldstein then joked, “I’ll give it my best shot, but two weeks seems rather tight… I don’t need to be as muscular as Thor, do I?
His physical stature was small yet suggested a hidden depth, and the recent gossip appears to hint at more from Marvel in store. Just like Love and Thunder, fan reception towards Goldstein as Thor was not universally enthusiastic, but according to his own statements, perhaps if he gains more muscle, it might sway fans’ opinions. However, there may be a potential problem since Marvel Comics has reimagined Hercules as bisexual.
Hercules in the Comics
In the world of comics, Hercules has been a well-known figure since his debut in “Journey into Mystery Annual” #1, which dates back to 1965. Initially presented as an adversary to Thor, their relationship has evolved over time, with both characters frequently engaging in battles and teaming up on various occasions. Known for his impulsive and bold nature, Hercules often finds himself butting heads with other heroes before eventually working together. He’s even squared off against the Hulk and starred in the “Incredible Hercules” comic series.
In the 1970s, he joined the Avengers team and later played a role in establishing the Champions. His comic book adventures span from intense fight sequences to humorous storylines where he grapples with self-doubts about his identity and significance. Over the years, Hercules has been involved in cosmic narratives, frequently crossing paths with other mythological characters within the Marvel universe. Additionally, he forged a close friendship with the Hulk.
What Could Be Next
If the gossip is correct, it’s possible that the Hercules project might pick up storylines from “Thor: Love and Thunder,” given that Goldstein has been confirmed for the role and if they decide to retain the actor.
It’s quite plausible that Chris Hemsworth might choose to step down from the Thor character, leaving an opening for Hercules to potentially take on the divine role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If the rumor is true, the Hercules project likely won’t happen until after Avengers: Doomsday.
