James Gunn’s Shocking MCU Regrets: Why He Didn’t Want Thor and Adam Warlock

In a recent chat, James Gunn, the mastermind behind the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, shares some of his top regrets regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He admitted he resisted Marvel’s initial idea to incorporate Thor into the Guardians series and expressed disappointment with the decision to introduce Adam Warlock in “Vol. 2”, referring to it as a nearly disastrous move.

Gunn Didn’t Want Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy 3

While discussing Superman and hinting at a post-credit sequence for the film, Gunn expressed that his experience incorporating post-credit scenes during his time at Marvel has influenced his perspective on them. Interestingly, despite Avengers: Endgame setting up an opportunity to involve Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn shared he was not keen on including him.

In a recent disclosure, Gunn stated, “In my script notes, I made it clear: ‘I won’t include him. I prefer not to have Thor in the Guardians.’ You see, I’m hesitant about making a movie featuring Thor because I find his character hard to grasp. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy watching his films and think Chris Hemsworth is fantastic. It’s just that I’m unsure about how to write for him.

Although Marvel had planned for Gunn to continue the crossover storyline in what was supposed to be his final film with Marvel, Gunn instead decided against it. Eventually, Taika Waititi took on the challenge and incorporated the Guardians into the beginning of “Thor: Love and Thunder.

Regrets Over Adam Warlock Setup

In addition, Gunn mentioned that he later felt remorse for joking about Adam Warlock in the film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2“.

In “Guardians 2”, James Gunn confessed he wasn’t fond of the parts where they introduced Adam Warlock, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and other elements that weren’t necessarily part of his original plans.

As per Gunn’s words, making Warlock fit into the third movie seemed analogous to attempting to squeeze a square peg into a round hole.

Post-Credit Scenes Can Backfire

Gunn pointed out that Marvel’s tendency to hint at upcoming tales may pose challenges for movie creators, particularly if these plotlines weren’t initially planned within their original concept.

Apparently, I had intended to keep my word regarding the [Adam Warlock] appearance, but it’s important to be cautious. You see, a post-credits scene is like a sudden surprise, such as ‘Wow! Check this out!’ explained Gunn. “When used only for setting something up, it can sometimes backfire. It wasn’t straightforward to incorporate Adam Warlock into Guardians 3. I enjoyed collaborating with Will, and I appreciated the character, but truthfully, was he a bit like trying to force a square peg into a round hole? To some extent, yes.

Initially, it appears that director James Gunn might have handled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 differently if given complete creative control from the beginning. The fact that Warlock was ultimately included in the movie suggests that Marvel may have had plans for this character within the MCU, potentially hinting at a future role for Adam Warlock.

Gunn’s Superman flies into theaters on July 11.
