In the past, there were multiple dragons roaming the world, and it was House Targaryen who took control over these fearsome creatures in Westeros following their departure from Valyria. Over the centuries, numerous dragons have served under the command of the Targaryens. Here, we’ll be ranking the most powerful and largest dragons in Game of Thrones.

15. Dreamfyre

Dreamfyre, a stunning and regal dragon, brought great honor to House Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons due to its extraordinary beauty surpassing that of any other dragon they had ever owned. Its riders held their heads high with pride because only those as exceptional as Dreamfyre were deemed worthy to command such a magnificent beast.

Despite Dreamfyre’s breathtaking beauty, it never participated in the battles of the Dance of the Dragons. However, after the fall, Syrax was shackled, surviving only until the storming of Dragonpit where she met her tragic end in battle.

In the events of House of the Dragon, Aegon II hasn’t made an appearance yet because he has not been born, but he will soon emerge as one of the claimants to the Iron Throne during the Dance of Dragons. Given his strong potential to rule over Westeros, it was essential for him to have a powerful steed in the form of Sunfyre, renowned for being the most stunning dragon with its radiant golden scales, among all dragons.

However, even in its wounded state, Caraxes demonstrated remarkable tenacity by managing to crawl to the shore before expiring.

During the conquest of Westeros, Meraxes – one of three dragons brought by Aegon the Conqueror and his wives – was one of the largest and most powerful dragons ever known on the continent. At its prime, it surpassed even Vhagar in size; however, Vhagar eventually grew to nearly equal Balerion’s size due to its advanced age, since dragons continue growing throughout their lifetimes. If Meraxes had lived longer, it likely would have outgrown Vhagar as well.

Among the initial trio of dragons that dominated Westeros, Vhagar was the smallest, even smaller than Meraxes. Yet, since it outlived the original three, it expanded to nearly Balerion’s size. Consequently, Vhagar is recognized as the second-largest dragon in the annals of Westeros’ history.
