María Gabriela de Faría Imagined a Dark, Intimate Bond Between The Engineer and Lex Luthor: “I kept telling James, ‘I think they f****d’”

María Gabriela de Faría will join the DC Universe by portraying The Engineer in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, slated for release on July 11, 2025. In this role, she embodies Angela Spica, a scientist who has innovatively replaced her blood with nanotechnology, granting her the ability to finely control her body and environment using liquid metal-like precision. Notably, Spica is associated with a DC team yet to be adapted for live-action: The Authority.

During the latest DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, de Faría discussed her perspective on the relationship between The Engineer, played by Nicholas Hoult’s character Lex Luthor.

She shared that she often expressed to director James Gunn her thoughts about the character of Lex Luthor, saying something along the lines of, “I believe he’s a jerk.” She went on to explain, “You know, Lex is very serious and has this stunning girlfriend whom he treats poorly. So I thought, perhaps after hours, Engineer could be quite cruel to Lex, and he enjoys it. That’s how I portrayed the character.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but speculate about the intriguing dynamic between Lex and Engineer in de Faría’s work. Although there’s no concrete evidence supporting a romantic relationship, her portrayal has subtly colored my perspective when watching the movie. Frankly, it’s challenging not to read deeper into their on-screen encounters, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the viewing experience.

As a cinephile, I must say, delving into the sinister role of the antagonist was nothing short of delectable – an experience akin to unveiling my very own good and evil twins. Simply put, it was divine!

On July 11, 2025, Superman will make his return to cinemas, starting a fresh tale within the DC Universe under the guidance of director James Gunn.
