Last year at The Game Awards, I got hyped about a mysterious teaser from RGG Studio, the geniuses behind Like a Dragon/Yakuza. They weren’t giving much away then, just calling it Project Century. But now, they’ve officially unveiled the game’s Stranger Than Heaven. Can’t wait to jump into this new adventure!
Initially, when Project Century (now known as Stranger Than Heaven) was unveiled, it was suggested that the game would be set in Japan around 1914, possibly similar to Like a Dragon’s Kamurocho. However, a recent trailer showcases a timecode of 1943 and a location resembling Sotenbori. The change in setting has left us puzzled; it might mean the game has moved to a different era, but considering its original name, it could also imply a game that covers various decades. We’ll need to wait for more information, but RGG Studio has updated the TGA trailer with a new ending and renamed the game, suggesting this may not be a full transition to a new time period.
Regarding the freshly released trailer, it displays numerous scenes of rapid-fire battles reminiscent of earlier previews. However, it also introduces some novel gameplay elements. The primary innovation appears to be a decision-making system and enhanced detective investigations, somewhat comparable to the Judgment subseries, which undeniably seems engaging.
Currently, RGG Studio hasn’t made clear whether the upcoming game will be connected to the broader Yakuza series or a separate project under a new brand. The trailer concludes with the protagonist’s eyes emitting a glow, which hints at similarities to the heat effects in the Yakuza games, but there isn’t much concrete information available yet.
No release date or launch platforms have been revealed for Stranger Than Heaven.
