As a passionate movie lover, I was saddened to learn that Disney has decided to shelve their unique and vibrant children’s animated series, Primos. This one-of-a-kind show, celebrating diversity and multiculturalism, won’t be moving forward as initially planned.
Multicultural Disney show canceled
The show, labeled as a “fresh take on the coming-of-age genre with a comedic twist,” showcases producer Natasha Kline’s real-life multicultural, mixed Mexican-American family, and her journey of growing up as a second-generation Latina.
The official explanation goes on: ‘Disney Television Animation creates this unique series that chronicles Tater Ramirez Humphrey, a dreamer with a vivid imagination. With only one summer left to decide her future, things get complicated when her mom invites 12 cousins for a visit. Initially dreading the situation, Tater ends up having the most amazing summer yet. Despite family members who don’t always grasp her dreams, they unconditionally love and encourage her, accepting her just as she is.’
We get confirmation of the cancellation of Primos after one season via Animation Magazine:

The controversy
It seems that Primos faced criticism from its intended audience, Latinos, who argued that the show misused Spanish, leaned heavily on outdated Latino stereotypes, and failed to provide an accurate portrayal of their culture.
Disney cancels DEI
Originally titled “Primo” and set to appear in Disney’s lineup, the project now joins the redevelopment of the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) “Tiana” series. This series was initially canceled and is based on Disney’s first African-American princess from the movie “The Princess and The Frog.
Alongside other productions, Disney has decided to discontinue Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur after two seasons. This series focused on the escapades of a 13-year-old prodigy, Lunella Lafayette, and her colossal T-Rex companion, Devil Dinosaur.
Disney Plus has taken down Marvel content that focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes shows like “Marvel’s Project Hero”, “Marvel’s MPower”, and “Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever”.
Disney Lucasfilm also canceled The Acolyte after one season.
