Journal in Elden Ring Nightreign covers more than just lore

FromSoftware games are always full of lore, more or less clear elements of the plot, the discovery of which requires additional effort from the player. Usually, you figure it out by reading item descriptions, observing your surroundings, or completing tricky side quests. In Elden Ring: Nightreign, you have access to a journal that seems to serve that exact function. In the journal, you’ll find personal stories of each playable character, learning about their past, and making progress with a given character will reward you with extra entries. However, this is not the only use of the journal, thanks to which you can gain much more tangible rewards than just lore. In this article, we describe what Remembrances are all about.

What are Remembrances?

Side quests called “Remembrances” can be found for each of the playable characters in this game. As you progress with a specific character, their personal story unfolds and some parts connect to these Remembrances. You may receive a notification at the bottom right corner when returning from an expedition that new Remembrances are available. To access them, visit the journal in the Roundtable Hold once they become unlocked. It’s important to unlock all characters like Duchess and Revenant as soon as possible because some Remembrances may require interaction between these characters. For instance, in the first Remembrance for Duchess, she needs to speak with Revenant, so this memory will be unavailable until you’ve unlocked him.

Each Remembrance serves as an optional mission, where you’ll assume the role assigned to it during gameplay. Switching characters mid-mission will disrupt the Remembrance, forcing a restart from the beginning. To avoid this, it’s advisable to finish the Remembrance with the designated character first. Upon completing a Remembrance, you’ll earn rewards tailored to that specific character. These can include rare artifacts, new spells, versatile chalices for various relic combinations, or items leading to alternate endings once the final night lord has been vanquished.

To access Remembrances, you need to play as a specific character. Over time, a new Remembrance will become accessible. However, there are two obstacles that prevent new Remembrances from appearing. A new Remembrance won’t appear until you finish the one currently active. It might also remain inaccessible until you defeat the subsequent Nightlord. The blocked Remembrances do not require re-unlocking. Once the obstruction is removed, such as when you complete the current memory or begin a new expedition, all pending Remembrances should become accessible immediately.

How to complete Remembrances?

Lucky for you, completing Remembrances is significantly less complex compared to the intricate side quests often found in FromSoftware games. Once you trigger a Remembrance, the edge of your screen at the Roundtable Hold slightly distorts, indicating that progress can be made and switching characters will reset your status.

To start, check your map for the yellow exclamation mark icon. This symbol typically signifies one of the fortress’s inhabitants. Then, carry on a conversation with these characters until you’ve exhausted all their dialogue options. The subsequent step is usually to embark on an expedition.

In your journey on the expedition map, a distinctive red marker signaling a personal mission will show up, guiding you there. At this location, you often encounter a boss battle or search for a unique item. Regardless of whether you emerge victorious or meet defeat, complete the objective and move forward with your adventure. Importantly, only one player can have an active personal quest at a time. If you team up with strangers, the game will match you with players who don’t currently have active missions. If you play with friends and multiple individuals have active missions simultaneously, the game will prioritize and highlight only the host player’s quest.

Once you’ve accomplished your personal objective and go back to Roundtable Hold, you’ll need to chat with a few characters marked with exclamation points. Continue this until all the exclamation marks disappear. At that point, you can head back to the journal where you will complete the Remembrance, earning a reward. Each character has their own set of Remembrances within their storyline, so it’s beneficial to do them, especially if you appreciate their playstyle – as you’ll uncover more about their story and acquire relics that boost them.
