In his latest documentary, Billy Joel candidly discussed the times he contemplated suicide following feelings of guilt from an affair with a friend’s wife, Elizabeth Weber Small. This led him into a deep depression.

The musician remembered feeling deeply distressed when he realized he had destroyed a home, since at the time, Elizabeth was married to Jon Small, a member of Joel’s band.

During the initial screening at the Tribeca Film Festival, Billy Joel’s documentary was unveiled, and Weber Small was also present. Thirty-three years after their separation, she shared insights about her relationship with the artist. The couple had been together for nine years, and upon their divorce, Joel’s first wife declared that their marriage was truly “wonderful.

In that riveting documentary that made its debut at the film festival, Joel confessed, “I couldn’t shake off this immense guilt. They shared a child, and I realized I had broken up their home, felt like a homewrecker.” He went on to explain, “I was head over heels for a woman, and boy, did I get my heart punched, which I knew I deserved. Jon was seething with anger. I was devastated.

The renowned pianist further stated that Jon’s blow rendered him unconscious entirely, causing him to slip into a prolonged coma. Additionally, he asserted that he experienced a near-psychotic state and endured immense pain in the aftermath.

Regarding his suicide attempt, Joel mentioned that his sister, a medical assistant, had given him some pills to help him rest. Unfortunately, he ended up taking all of them at once. Later, Judy, his sister, recalled, “I went to visit him in the hospital, and he was as pale as a sheet. I thought I had caused his death.

His sibling also added that he tried to kill himself again later, but Jon saved him.
