Embarking on a journey through the captivating world of ‘Ultraman,’ I delve into the realm of Japanese superhero franchises that have stood the test of time, tracing its roots back to 1966. In this series, we encounter colossal alien protectors who safeguard our planet from a myriad of perils, including monstrous creatures, extraterrestrial beings, and malevolent entities. Among these adversaries, some tower as the most formidable and treacherous opponents that Ultraman has ever confronted. In this piece, we will unravel the identity of the strongest villains in the ‘Ultraman’ universe by assessing their prowess based on their powers, achievements, and encounters with the Ultras. Who are these formidable foes? Let us discover together.
10. Dark Lucifer
Debut: Ultraman Nexus
In the year 2012, Dark Lucifer, an extraordinary being crafted by Dark Zagi, emerged three years after his creator’s downfall. Unlike other beings of his kind, Dark Lucifier does not wear a suit; instead, his design is the creation of Yasushi Torisawa, blending elements from past main adversaries in the Ultra N project.
Three years following Dark Zagi’s conquest, Kazuki Komon heads the Japanese Night Raider division. A series of peculiar events involving memory loss lead Komon and Nagi to uncover the source – a colossal, malevolent figure known as Dark Lucifer, a member of the Memory Police. Joining forces with Ultraman Noa, Komon and Nagi face this new menace head-on.
In the original plan for Ultraman Nexus, Dark Lucifer was meant to be the main antagonist. However, because of low ratings, Zagi took over as the ultimate enemy instead. The novel adaptation, on the other hand, changes things up by depicting Dark Lucifer not as Zagi’s revived form, but as a new creation that alters the series’ ending.
9. Absolute Tartarus

Debut: Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement about the chilling tale unfolding in the cosmos. In this epic saga, a formidable warrior hailing from the Absolutian realm, known as Absolute Tartarus, is on a relentless quest to conquer the Land of Light. He’s amassing allies and monstrous beings from diverse timelines, among them, the colossal Maga-Orochi.
In a strange twist, Tartarus teams up with an extraterrestrial being called Sran, who facilitates the delivery of Gudi’s cells to Maga-Orochi. This sinister move propels Maga-Orochi’s evolution at an alarming pace, setting it on a destructive path toward annihilating our universe.
However, the universe isn’t defenseless. Delacion, a guardian of Universal Justice, senses Tartarus’ nefarious presence. In response, Ultraman Cosmos and Ultraman Justice are dispatched to investigate and challenge Tartarus across multiple dimensions. The fate of our universe hangs in the balance as this thrilling interdimensional conflict unfolds!
8. Yapool

Debut: Ultraman Ace
In the Ultraman Ace series, Yapool serves as the primary villain, depicted as an everlasting foe with an unwavering enmity towards Ultras. Despite numerous setbacks, he appears almost invincible due to his cunning, intelligence, and ability to transform into various creatures called Choju, allowing him to hide and evade death. This resilience and strategic thinking are what keep Yapool coming back as a powerful opponent in the show.
7. Dark Zagi

Debut: Battle of Dream NOA
In the Ultra N Project, Dark Zagi – a wicked duplicate of Ultraman Noa – assumes the role of the primary adversary. Originally developed as a biological weapon for combating Space Monsters by extraterrestrial beings, Zagi defies his makers and embarks on a rampage across the cosmos, clashing with a legion of intergalactic creatures referred to as Space Beasts.
Regardless of his wild demeanor, Zagi demonstrates intelligence by crafting complex strategies, indicating a strategic mindset. His human companion stands out with advanced abilities in cybersecurity and investigation, assisting the Night Riders to free Ren by neutralizing TLT’s security systems. Though disciplined on stage, Zagi transforms into a fierce combatant on screen, showing no mercy towards antagonists such as EX Zetton during Ultraman Ginga’s live show.
6. Cicada Human

Debut: Ultra Q
Undercover as a human, the being known as the Cicada Man made off with the Tilsonite meteor to command two Garamons into wreaking havoc on Tokyo. When military forces attempted to intervene, his advanced technology enabled weapons to levitate and shoot, but it was Jun who successfully disrupted the device. With the alien’s schemes falling apart, the Cicada Man was unmasked, leading to him being fatally shot. In response, his own kind retaliated with a beam of light, executing him for his failure, which ultimately resulted in a raging inferno.
5. Ultraman Tregear

Debut: Ultraman R/B The Movie: Select! The Crystal of Bond
As a child with an intense interest in forbidden topics, Tregear gained the nickname “mad curiosity.” He formed a tight bond with Taro. However, when Belial and Hikari fell from grace, it disrupted Tregear’s sense of righteousness. Confronted with hardships, he chose to isolate himself. After consuming Grimdo, Tregear transformed into a callous manipulator, promising people their heart’s desires while secretly sowing despair and misery. He delights in causing pain indirectly, committing seemingly trivial crimes, revealing his warped morality, love for disorder, and destructive tendencies.
4. Camearra

Debut: Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey
Kamila, more commonly known as Camearra, assumes the role of chief among the Three Dark Titans and serves as the main antagonist in the 2000 movie Ultraman Tiga: The Last Journey. Initially a fellow warrior alongside Ultraman Tiga, Camearra wields dark powers that surpass those of the other two titans but remain weaker than Ultraman Tiga’s own dark capabilities. Prior to his allegiance with the light, Camearra bestowed upon Ultraman Tiga his Multi Type and Glitter forms through his powerful dark energies.
3. Alien Empera

Debut: Ultraman Taro
In the series Ultraman Mebius, Empera, often referred to as the Lord of Darkness or just the Emperor, plays the role of the primary antagonist. He’s the last known member of his alien race who turned to darkness for survival. Commanding the Empera Army and the Four Heavenly Dark Kings, he is a powerful adversary, comparable to the being he created – Armored Darkness. Although mentioned in Ultraman Taro, it isn’t until the final four episodes that Empera physically appears. Importantly, “Empera” doesn’t represent his alien species or home planet.
2. Bemular

Debut: Ultraman
In a twist of events, the fearsome creature known as Bemular, a beast resembling a reptile, managed to break free from the Giant’s Tomb and clashed with Ultraman on Earth, leading to its annihilation. However, another form of Bemular emerged from the Monster Graveyard, only to be thwarted by Ultraman Mebius. This leaves the question open as to whether these two are indeed the same being or not. The initial Bemular then escaped the Monster Graveyard, making a landing in Earth’s Lake Ryugamori, where it concealed itself. Meanwhile, Ultraman, following a collision with Shin Hayata’s spaceship, combined with him out of sorrow, leading the Science Patrol to pursue and engage Bemular in the lake, resulting in a fierce fight during which Bemular seized and assaulted their ship.
1. Ultraman Belial

Debut: Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends The Movie
Originally strong and noble, Ultraman Belial was corrupted by greed, attempting to steal the Plasma Spark. After his failed attempt, he was transformed into a Reionic Ultra by Rayblood. He was then imprisoned by Ultraman King but managed to launch an attack on the Land of Light, which was stopped by Ultraman Zero. Later, Belial built an empire in another dimension and continued his battles with Ultraman Zero, eventually leading to his demise. However, as a spirit, he sought revival and briefly took control of Ultraman Zero before being defeated again. Eventually, he became the father of Ultraman Geed in the series, Ultraman Geed.
