Is Star Trek Ending? Skydance May Cut Ties with Kurtzman and Halt the Franchise

It’s being speculated that Skydance might be planning to part ways with Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout production studio, which could potentially halt the ongoing Star Trek saga and temporarily pause the franchise.

According to our previous article, there were rumors about a major overhaul in “Star Trek,” referred to as the “Great Reset.” It was suggested that Skydance might discard the entire Kurtzman-era once the Paramount merger is finalized. Now, fresh information from the same source provides additional insights and potentially reveals a timeline for this change.

The report indicates that Skydance might be planning to part ways with Kurtzman after they receive legal guidance about his contract renewal. This could suggest that they are making preparations for a potential separation following the completion of their merger with Paramount.

Additionally, it’s reported that there hasn’t been any dialogue, be it formal or casual, regarding the expansion of our partnership with Secret Hideout.

It’s also worth noting that it appears Skydance might be eager to replace the creative team as soon as possible following the completion of Strange New Worlds, indicating that a potential change could have already been decided upon.

Regardless of who takes over from Kurtzman, it’s unlikely that audiences will be able to watch anything on screen before 2029 or 2030, given the usual length of production schedules.

What does the rumor say?

The rumor originates from the Tachyon Pulse Podcast, which has been revealing numerous scoops from the UK recently. This YouTuber suggests they have another source who has informed them that Skydance might be planning to part ways with Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Although this information is not yet confirmed, the YouTuber considers it a strong hint about potential future developments.

“This really is a very strong indicator that they’re not going to give Secret Hideout a new deal.”

The YouTube content creator discusses the possible consequences should Skydance decide not to extend their contract with Kurtzman.

If the boss requests a legal explanation about their actions when he doesn’t receive a new contract, it seems they have already made up their mind about their course of action.

Additionally, he proposes that unlike the arrangement with Marvel on Netflix previously, which had a delay clause, Skydance would have the freedom to promptly initiate work with a fresh team right away.

It seems that particular arrangement isn’t part of the contract. Once Secret Hideout finishes work on Star Trek and Strange New Worlds is completed, Skydance will be free to collaborate with someone else.

And perhaps the clearest hint that Kurtzman’s out:

I haven’t engaged in any discussions or requested projections concerning a renewal of the deal with Secret Hideout. I’ve been informed that no such conversations have taken place.

Finally, he adds a sobering timeline:

“Even if Skydance are really on the ball… we won’t get anything on the screen till 2029 or 2030.”

What’s next for Star Trek?

Again, presently this is all rumor, and there is new Star Trek coming to Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 premieres July 17. Season 4 has also already been greenlit.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is also slated to premiere in 2026.
