In many regions worldwide, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been released, accompanied by a variety of accompanying items such as controllers, cases, screen protectors, and more. Among these accessories, one particularly captivating for the Switch 2 is the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, which allows you to engage in video calls using the newly integrated GameChat feature, and even incorporate your live camera feed into certain games.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s Official Camera retails at $54.99, featuring a 1080p video feed, a sturdy stand, and a USB-C cable designed for connection to the top USB port of the console. However, it might not be worth the investment upon careful consideration.
The updated Nintendo Switch (Switch 2) is compatible with many USB webcams through the USB-A ports found on its dock. We’ve tried out around six different types of USB webcams, ranging from high-end $200 models to budget $15 options without a brand name, and each one functioned perfectly without any issues.
Apart from being somewhat different, the picture quality between these cameras is hardly noticeable. In fact, some cameras appeared superior due to their lens configurations, low-light performance, and field of view. However, the overall image quality of the Switch 2’s camera feed seems less than ideal. As such, any webcam that offers at least 1080p resolution, or even 720p, is likely to perform satisfactorily for most purposes.
Consider opting for an economical webcam instead, given its high price tag of $54.99. While the official camera is undeniably a quality product, we find it overpriced considering its significant loss in quality when compared to more expensive options. To clarify, the problem isn’t with the camera itself; it has a good sensor and a 1080p30 resolution that, though not exceptional, is superior to some webcams we’ve tested. However, it appears that this camera will not support these capabilities on the Switch, so it would be wise to save your money.
