In more relaxed terms: Loki, the trickster god from Asgard, has become one of Marvel’s most beloved anti-heroes, particularly in recent times due to Tom Hiddleston’s outstanding portrayal across the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His appearances span multiple films and the latest “Loki” TV series on Disney+. Given Loki’s significant role in the Multiverse and his impact on temporal and spatial events within the Marvel universe, we here at Fiction Horizon thought it fitting to focus this article on the best Loki comic book stories ever penned.
In this piece, we’ll share with you a countdown of 25 outstanding Loki comic book tales, arranged from #25 to #1. We’ll provide you with essential details about the comics and stories, but remember, this is just an overview; for a richer understanding, we recommend reading the actual comics.
25. “Loki’s Dream”
Writer(s): Peter David
Artist(s): John Estes
Publication Date: December 1994
In essence, the solitary tale penned by Peter David is what’s often referred to as “Tales to Astonish” Volume 3, although its categorization is debatable. Within this story, Hank Pym and the Wasp find themselves in Oslo on a mission to apprehend a murderer. This individual, however, wasn’t just any common criminal; he was under Loki’s influence but had succumbed to full-blown madness, setting off a deadly rampage that could potentially lead to Ragnarok – the apocalyptic event marking the end of the world.
It’s interesting to note that Loki plays a more supporting role in this specific comic issue. However, given his profound impact on the overall storyline of the series, we thought it would be fitting to kick off our discussion with this very issue, delving deep into Loki’s legendary backstory and origins.
24. Marvel Fanfare (vol. 1) #34-37
Writer(s): Alan Zelenetz
Artist(s): Charles Vess
Publication Date: September 1987 – April 1988
The Norn sisters foretell a wedding happening under the summer stars, or else Asgard and all the Nine Realms face a curse. Volstagg attends the wedding, while Loki keeps an eye on the bride and groom. Enraged by his exclusion from the festivities, Loki transforms the groom into a goat, who escapes into the woods. In disguise as an old man, Loki presents the bride with another goat, claiming it to be her husband. He tells her that only a well in Wolfsburg can reverse the spell.
While Volstagg is hanging out at an inn, expecting Fandral and Hogun, a bride arrives instead. She asks him to transport her goat to Wolfsburg, which he agrees to do. Not long after, Volstagg and the goat run into an elderly woman who swaps her tired horse for a donkey. As they journey toward Wolfsburg, the donkey mysteriously transforms into a flaming beast, guiding them straight to the castle gates. Upon arrival, they are confronted by worshipers of werewolves, but they manage to find the well they’ve been searching for. Volstagg attempts to immerse the goat in the well, but nothing happens, so he decides to venture inside on his own.
In a different turn of events, Loki deceives another warrior from the Three by enticing him with a second goat for an unwise task. Meanwhile, Hogun, charged with caring for a goat suspected to be from the Elven Forest’s cursed tree, embarks on this journey alongside the accused murderer Vilar. His distrust towards the forest spirits and his own obstinate pride complicate the journey, making it tougher than expected. Nearly defeated by a venomous serpent lurking in the tree, Hogun eventually concedes and pleads for assistance from the spirits and Vilar.
The Sprites flutter towards the snake, intending to tickle its chin with a feather and make it fall asleep. Once everything is resolved, and the fruit doesn’t transform the goat into a killer, Hogun eventually succumbs to sharing a rare chuckle with his friends. Loki deceives Una’s father by being unfaithful with another sham goat, causing him to assign Fandral the task of taking the goat to Love Island and seeking aid from Freya’s priestess. The island of love is inhabited solely by virgins who tend to Freya’s temple, vowing never to love until the end of their training period.
Without fail, Fandral persistently charms every woman he encounters. He convinces a girl on the boat that he’ll take her with him and marry her, disregarding any prior commitments. However, once she discovers he’s wooing other women immediately afterward, she leaves heartbroken and contemplates jumping off a cliff. Upon learning this, Fandral resists the urge to avoid blame and instead offers an apology, acknowledging his actions and promising the Priestess that her vows won’t be held against her.
The Priestess verifies that Fandral’s goat is indeed a genuine goat and, using her own powers, identifies Loki as the one responsible for the murder spell. She sends Fandral back to Asgard’s Meadows to deal with the situation appropriately. Before he departs, as a form of penance, Fandral gives the priestess an oversized scroll listing all the women he had promised to marry and swears never to approach her again. The Warriors Three reunite and set out for Loki’s Castle to rescue the victim, while also sending Vilar to inform Odin and Thor, who are on their way to the wedding with their group.
In this rephrased version: Loki dispatches his sinister ravens with the mission of delaying the warriors, but even if they arrive at his stronghold, he morphs into a dragon and casts illusions over them to weaken their resolve. Fandral encounters an alluring woman, Volstag faces a fearsome beast, while Hogun simply sees an ordinary door. Drawing on the knowledge gained earlier in the day, each warrior successfully penetrates Loki’s illusion, engaging him in battle.
The dragon attempts an escape after slaughtering the goat, but Thor’s swift intervention zaps the monster with lightning until its enchantments fade. Consequently, both the dragon and the goat revert back to their original shapes. Subsequently, the scheduled wedding proceeds as planned, and even Loki is permitted to attend, having been transformed by Odin into a goat.
23. “Tales of Asgard”
Writer(s): Stan Lee
Artist(s): Jack Kirby
Publication Date: April 1965 – June 1966
The collection you see titled ‘Tales of Asgard’ is actually a series of spin-off stories, penned by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby. These stories were initially published within the main run of Journey Into Mystery and Thor comics. Beyond the 15 issues we’ve covered here (#115-129, some of which are compiled in Journey Into Mystery and the first volume of Thor), there are many more tales that delve deeper into Marvel’s interpretation of Norse mythology, adding depth and richness to the universe.
These tales delve deeply into the world and character of Loki, the trickster deity, offering glimpses into his life in Asgard, his connections to his realm, and his interactions with other inhabitants who share his space.
22. “Dark Reign”
Writer(s): Various
Artist(s): Alex Maleev
Publication Date: February 2009
Following the Skrull attack, Norman Osborn, previously the Green Goblin and head of the Thunderbolts, takes over from Tony Stark (Iron Man) as director of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is then disbanded and reformed under a new name, H.A.M.M.E.R. The original Initiative, established post-Civil War, is broken up and restructured into the Thunderbolts Initiative. Due to damage inflicted by the Thor clone, Ragnarok, Camp Hammond is shut down and replaced with Camp H.A.M.M.E.R.
Norman Osborn establishes a criminal alliance known as “Cabal,” which includes heavyweights like Doctor Doom, Emma Frost, Namor, Loki, and Hood. Instead of confronting them in battle, his plan is to manipulate the world, granting them more power. However, the New Avengers refuse to bow down to Norman Osborn and aim to overthrow him from his position, using force if required.
From the perspective of a movie critic:
In a world turned upside down, I find myself grappling with the profound transformation of one Tony Stark, a man once known for his wit, charm, and technological prowess. Now, he’s on the run, stripped of Extremis and wanted by earth’s authorities. Meanwhile, Hank Pym, mourning the loss of his partner, the Wasp, dons his alias anew and assembles a new incarnation of the Mighty Avengers, a group now operating outside the law.
Bullseye, Venom, Daken, Moonstone, Sentry, and Ares – former members of Stark’s Avengers. Osborn, in a brilliantly cunning move, equips them with the costumes and codenames of acclaimed heroes such as Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, garnering approval from the media and public.
This intricate web of alliances and deception paints a grim picture for the future of Earth’s mightiest heroes, as they navigate the treacherous waters of loyalty, trust, and survival.
1) The team is brought onto the battlefield by Osborn personally, donning one of the Iron Man suits that’s been colored like Captain America’s, adopting the moniker Iron Patriot. Ms. Marvel opts to defy Osborn’s rules and aligns with the New Avengers, a group consisting of Clint Barton (formerly known as Ronin), who publicly unveiled his identity on live television, accusing Osborn of being a dangerous madman.
As a die-hard movie buff, let me rephrase this for you: I follow the thrilling escapades of The Dark Avengers, who jet off to the enigmatic realm of Latveria, lending a hand to Victor von Doom in his battle against Morgana le Fay. Initially, we’re at a loss, but Norman Osborn’s clever strategy turns the tide in our favor. Meanwhile, Tony Stark, on the run, roams the globe aimlessly, drawing strength from the support of Pepper Potts and Maria Hill. The Hulk, embodied by Bruce Banner, can no longer transform due to the Red Hulk’s presence, and Osborn sends Ares to verify this fact. In a twist of fate, Bruce is unable to transform, but he’s saved when A-Bomb intervenes.
In my view, Aken’s claws have been augmented by the enchanted metal from the Muramasa sword I purloined from Cyclops. This villain has managed to accomplish nearly all his ambitions, amassing power that appears unstoppable, leaving even the Fantastic Four and New Avengers seemingly incapable of thwarting him. Yet, the darkness within Norman seems to be growing ever stronger, asserting control over his very being. His latest lunatic scheme involves the destruction of Asgard’s earthly headquarters.
According to Loki’s counsel, he launched an assault on the divine city following a disastrous encounter with Volstag. Upon learning that Thor was in distress, Captain America Steve Rogers quickly rallied his superhero team to aid the gods. In the battle’s final moments, only a few of Norman Osborn’s soldiers remained, with Sentry being the last one standing. However, remorseful for his actions, the heroes used Loki’s Stones of Standards to harness their strength and ultimately defeated Sentry. This left Norman Osborn in prison.
21. Mighty Avengers (vol.1) #27-29, 32-34, 36
Contributors: Dan Slott and Christos N. Gage
Illustrators: Various
Published Duration: September 2009 to June 2010
This new story, set in the same timeline, introduces Lady Loki, a modern take on the character Loki in feminine form. In this series, the Avengers face an external danger, but Lady Loki’s involvement could potentially disrupt the team. As the God of Mischief, she finds joy in sowing discord among the group she secretly belongs to, using her disguise to cause chaos within their ranks.
Lady Loki, unlike his widely recognized Lady Sif persona, is disguised as the Scarlet Witch in this instance. This means that while he appears to be the Scarlet Witch, it is actually Loki who is pulling the strings behind the scenes and manipulating the group, a fact hidden by his deception. His peculiar behavior, unlike the normal Scarlet Witch’s, serves as a clue indicating that something might not be as it seems.
20. Avengers West Coast (vol. 2) #55
Writer(s): John Byrne
Artist(s): John Byrne
Publication Date: February 1990
In an obscure installment of the less-frequently read “Avengers West Coast” comic series, Loki opted for his signature deceit to exact his vengeance. His scheme was cunningly crafted, even though the heroes managed to resolve it swiftly, it was still worthy of mention on our list. Specifically, in this issue, Loki orchestrated a plot where he controlled a gang of villains to engage in combat with a group of superheroes. Sounds routine, right? However, there’s a twist:
Loki didn’t control the villains directly; instead, he manipulated their minds so that they believed themselves to be heroes fighting for justice. This gave the battle an unexpected and intriguing dynamic.
Specifically, unlike in many other situations, these heroes have not previously encountered the villains created by Loki, and naturally, the reverse is also true. Consequently, the battle became challenging because neither side was ready for what transpired, making it difficult to predict their opponents’ actions. Meanwhile, Loki reveled in his cunningness as he observed his vengeance unfold before him.
19. Journey Into Mystery (vol. 1) #85
Writer(s): Stan Lee, Larry Lieber
Artist(s): Jack Kirby
Publication Date: October 1962
In the faraway realm of Asgard, where the gods of Asgard reside, the mischievous deity Loki found himself imprisoned within a tree, left there by Odin until someone showed compassion and wept over him, thus breaking his confinement. Once Loki managed to exert some influence over the tree, he gently let a leaf drift from its branches as the god Heimdall passed nearby. The leaf accidentally fell into Heimdall’s eye, causing him to reflexively blink back a tear, inadvertently releasing Loki from his cell.
Now freed, Loki embarks on plotting his retribution against his half-brother Thor, leveraging his mystical bond with Thor’s hammer to track Thor down to New York City on Earth. Upon arriving on Earth, Loki assumes a lethal form and heads to the hospital where Thor was interacting with sick kids; unfortunately for Thor, he had already departed. Failing to locate Thor amidst the vast population, Loki devises a strategy to lure Thor out by conjuring a spell that transforms people in the city into their darker counterparts, inciting chaos and disorder.
Under his everyday persona as Donald Blake and accompanied by his nurse Jane Foster, Thor recognizes the issue at hand and discreetly departs to assume his godly form. Wielding the magical powers of his Uru hammer, Thor is able to restore people to their normal state. As the crowd acclaims him, he is met by his half-brother who unveils his true identity to him.
In an attempt to dominate their aerial battle, Loki manages to capture Thor and mesmerizes him effortlessly. He commands Thor to surrender the hammer, but Thor, bound by his father Odin’s will, refuses. However, Loki ultimately prevails when he summons a mystical duplicate of Thor, ordering his minion to replicate it. Interestingly, Thor obliges intentionally. Loki then instructs Thor to head to the zoo and set free all the animals.
Loki fails to clarify that once Thor is more than sixty seconds distant from his hammer, he assumes Donald Blake’s identity. In this state, Blake breaks free from Loki’s influence and slips past a cluster of people who are unable to lift Thor’s hammer due to their lack of worthiness. Blake then transforms back into Thor. After Loki’s plan is exposed, he tries to flee under the wing of a band of birds, but Thor pursues the malevolent deity.
This results in a city-wide conflict where Loki, in a final attempt to flee, climbs onto a moving statue of Pegasus. However, Thor catches up and grabs him within a pipe before throwing him off his steed into the bay. Swiftly apprehending Loki, Thor then ascends to the Empire State Building’s peak, using his hammer to send Loki back to Asgard for punishment in front of Odin.
Following the retrieval of his hammer, Thor reappears in his regular Donald Blake persona, and he reconnects with Jane Foster, who continues to admire the remarkable deeds of Thor yet again.
18. Siege
Writer(s): Brian Michael Bendis
Artist(s): Oliver Coipel
Publication Date: December 2009 – May 201
In the gathering known as the Cabal, Loki was there when Norman Osborn declined to summon Namor for Doctor Doom. When a Doombot, disguised as Doctor Doom, launched swarming mechanical insects, Loki suggested that Hood should escape. After Osborn’s discussion with the President, Loki recommended orchestrating an event reminiscent of the Stamford incident, which would ultimately trigger an attack on Asgard.
In the following events, it was disclosed to Osborn a scheme that aimed to exploit Volstagg’s presence in Chicago. Given his past experiences as Thor, the U-Foes could target him, causing chaos at Soldier Field during a football game, potentially resulting in mass casualties among the crowd. Loki cautioned Balder about Osborn’s forthcoming assault on Asgard and asserted that he had attempted to dissuade Osborn from carrying out such an attack.
1. The individual eliminated a seer from Asgard who had foreseen the impending assault.
2. When Osborn requested assistance, Loki dispatched Hood and her team as additional support to bolster Osborn’s troops against the Avengers.
3. In a conversation with Balder, Loki admitted that he would have granted Thor forgiveness instead of exiling him if his thirst for the throne of Asgard hadn’t been present. Ultimately, Balder banished Loki from Asgard.
Following his transformation into Osborn’s Green Goblin, Loki ambushed Asgard at a later time. In the process, he tricked the Valkyries of Bor by leading them away with souls of wandering deities whom he had trapped as bait. This revelation showed that Loki aimed to command these Valkyries as his slaves.
13 Disir band together and launch an assault on him simultaneously, but cunning Loki outwits them with exceptional swordsmanship, leaving no choice but to yield to him and proclaim him the winner. In their encounter, Loki confronts Hela and inquires about her offer for a fresh Hel. She responds mysteriously, “Whatever you desire.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: I encounter Mephisto, showing off Disir’s power, promising to loan him Disir for a hundred and one days if he grants a piece of his underworld to Hela as his new “Hel” for a thousand and one years. To my surprise, Mephisto agrees to the deal.
As a result, Hela removed Loki from the Records of Hel, implying that he was no longer obligated to Hel or Asgard, thus gaining complete liberty. Mephisto inquired as to why Loki had devised such strategies, and Loki responded by saying that he found this approach more entertaining. Once the New Avengers, Young Avengers, and Secret Avengers defeated the Dark Avengers, Thor wanted to know where Loki had gone.
This version is a bit more conversational and flows better while maintaining the original meaning.
Norman Osborn could merely inform him they were deceased, including himself when the genuine shape of the Void manifested. As this entity ravaged through the three squads, Loki grew remorseful, acknowledging that what transpired in Asgard wasn’t his intention. He pleaded with his father, Odin, to reinstate the Norn Stones, which had been taken from the Hood and bestowed upon the trickster.
As a cinephile myself, I’d rephrase it like this: Using my power, I boosted the abilities of the three teams, imbuing them with the might of the Hood gang. Together, we took on the Void, but the Void sensed Loki’s influence and retaliated against him. Unlike the other Infinity Stones, the Void didn’t respond directly to Loki’s touch. In a heart-wrenching scene before a stunned Thor, Loki was torn apart by the tendrils of the Void. His final words were an apology to his brother.
Thor made up his mind to retaliate against the one who had slain his deceased brother, and he obliterated both the Void and Sentry using bolts of lightning. He transported the remnants of the Sentry beyond our planet and let go of them towards the sun.
17. Silver Surfer (vol. 1) #4
Writer(s): Stan Lee
Artist(s): John Buscema
Publication Date: February 1969
In seclusion, Loki simmers with anger, as Thor consistently foils his wicked schemes. He resolves to seek out the Cavern of Shadows in search of an individual potent enough to overpower the God of Thunder, his brother. Therein, he encounters the Silver Surfer and gains insights into his history and current state. He concludes that the Surfer is a suitable target for manipulation and control.
Excited to put my scheme into action, I stormed into Asgard where I encountered the valiant Warriors Three. Believing victory was within reach, I took a liking to them and hinted that Thor’s days were numbered. They hurried off to warn Thor, which sent a chill down his spine as he braced for battle. At the same time, the Silver Surfer found solace amidst nature, seeking respite from mankind’s destructive ways.
Although this break is brief, Loki soon appears and assaults him instantly. Loki aims to assess the Surfer’s bravery and measure his strength, but the Surfer declines to retaliate. However, when Loki endangers innocent people, the Surfer responds. In their battle, Loki learns that he has discovered a means to vanquish Thor, and he promptly concludes the fight as soon as it commences.
Loki convinces the Silver Surfer that his strength is vital for saving Asgard from Thor. In exchange, he promises to release the Surfer from Galactus’ confinement. Upon hearing this offer, the Silver Surfer agrees to help Loki. Interestingly, their journey to Asgard via the Bifrost bypasses the Galactus Barrier and allows the Surfer to break free from Earth. Once inside Asgard, Loki slips away, ensuring that no one among the other Asgardians realizes the true purpose of the Silver Surfer’s visit: to overpower Thor.
Initially, the Surfer encounters Heimdall at the Radiant Gates and gets admitted without any issues as he seems harmless. Afterwards, he ventures into Thor’s fortress and disrupts their banquet by challenging him to a fight. In response, the Warriors Three lunge towards the Surfer due to his threat, but Thor halts them and suggests that everyone should finish eating first before the contests start. The Surfer agrees to Thor’s proposition and is spellbound by the multitude of individuals who appear faithful to someone believed to be wicked.
While they dine, they observe the gladiators engage in combat, and unseen by many, Loki materializes in his ethereal form. He casts ominous doubts into the Surfer’s thoughts and incites one of the gladiators to aim his sword at him. This unexpected aggression enrages the Silver Surfer, prompting him to assault Loki. In response, Thor leaps into action to defend the Asgardian. Despite receiving news of the melee, Odin remains unfazed because he senses that both combatants possess noble hearts.
As a fervent admirer, I’m convinced that they will be alright, so I decide to retire for the night. In the arena, they engage in a fierce battle, but the Silver Surfer, imbued with Loki’s power, proves too formidable for Thor. Balder and Sif leap into action to shield Thor, and once more, the Surfer is taken aback by the bond of loyalty that Thor inspires. This act of devotion stirs a seed of doubt within me about Loki’s tale and motives. However, before I could clarify my thoughts to Thor, Loki whisked us both back to Earth, relegating me to my exile once more.
16. Avengers (vol. 1) #118
Writer(s): Steve Englehart
Artist(s): Bob Brown
Publication Date: December 1973
As Dormammu wields his malevolent gaze, the Dark Dimension gradually merges with the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616). This convergence brings about dramatic alterations to the environment, structures appear twisted, and human beings transform into demonic entities.
In this scenario, The Avengers and Defenders promptly respond and engage in combat against the invading demons. Doctor Strange discerns that they need to venture into the Dark Dimension and confront Dormammu directly. Yet, Captain America expresses concerns about massive casualties on Earth if everyone departed. Before a resolution can be reached, Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s agents, Fury’s group, decide to remain on Earth to fight the demons, while the others set off for the Dark Dimension.
As S.H.I.E.L.D. agents leave, they mysteriously metamorphose into demons. Fury then understands that the only solution is for the two superhero squads to band together and thwart Dormammu, who has released the full fury of the reformed Evil Eye within the Dark Dimension.
As a cinephile, I find myself in awe as characters I admire ascend their thrones once more. Yet again, Loki pleads for the restoration of his sight, but instead, I imprison him, accusing him of plotting against me. Shockingly, a guard appears, and I’m taken aback. Uatu steps in to assure me that he means no harm; he’s just there to witness the merging of two realms.
Simultaneously, the Avengers and Defenders push through hordes of Mindless Ones in their march further into the Dark Dimension. Across Earth-616, powerful characters globally engage in a persistent battle against the Dark Dimension’s invasion. Eventually, the Avengers and Defenders locate Dormammu, but the Defenders are immediately overpowered by his might.
In this scenario, the Avengers attempt to subdue their adversary, yet find themselves drawn into a trap instead. As Dormammu is occupied by the heroic team, Loki seizes the moment to strike from behind against Dormammu. The two engage in combat, and the Scarlet Witch manages to hit Dormammu with a hex bolt, pulling his power into the Evil Eye. This ray of evil energy subsequently falls upon Loki, restoring his vision, but driving him mad in the process.
Uatu clarifies that the final outcome was caused by Loki’s mind overpoweringly taking in Dormammu’s magical power, a force that no mind from his realm, not even one as eternal as an Asgardian, can fully comprehend or handle.
After the villains are overthrown, the merging of Earth-616 and the Dark Dimension will come to an end, allowing Earth’s inhabitants to resume their normal lives. The Defenders accompany the Evil Eye in search of a solution to free the Dark Knight, while the Avengers disappear under protective custody, taking Loki with them as he recovers from the destruction.
15. The Mighty Thor (vol. 1) #148
Writer(s): Stan Lee
Artist(s): Jack Kirby
Publication Date: January 1968
Since they disregarded his commands, Odin struck down Loki, Sif, and Balder using a burst of power that stripped them of their divine abilities – a punishment he had also inflicted on Thor earlier. Having gained every advantage over Thor, Loki slipped away in search of another strategy to overcome his half-brother.
In another part of town, a wealthy couple’s home was targeted by the notorious burglar known as Wrecker. The robbery was reported to the police, who quickly mobilized to apprehend the thief. Fearing arrest, Wrecker was forced to abandon his loot and flee, seeking out another target for his crimes.
In Dr. Donald Blake’s office, Thor, Balder, and Sif discuss ordering food while expressing their sorrow over losing their divine abilities. Elsewhere in town, Loki is attempting to contact Karnilla, the Queen of Norns, using a spell to recover his powers. Unbeknownst to him, Loki is being observed by the Wrecker who has marked him as his next target.
At a crucial moment during the incantation, the Wrecker bursts in and clubs Loki with his crowbar, sending him tumbling to the ground. However, when all he discovers is a unique container and Loki’s helmet, the intruder feels more than disillusioned. Regardless, he dons Loki’s helmet, and when Karnilla eventually arrives, she confuses the miscreant for Loki and bestows upon him the power that Loki had been yearning to reclaim.
Upon Loki’s resuscitation, he requests that the Wrecker hand over his power. Contrarily, the Wrecker gives back Loki’s helmet and relinquishes his crowbar. Although unsure of how to wield these powers, the Wrecker successfully transports Loki to Asgard. Enthralled by his newly acquired abilities, the Wrecker elects to employ them in furthering his criminal pursuits.
In Donald Blake’s office, Thor chooses to amuse Sif and Balder with a television program. However, their viewing is disrupted by a news broadcast about a freshly aggressive Wrecker causing chaos in the city. The trio from Asgard decide to confront this Wrecker, despite not having full strength available to them.
The Destructor persists in causing chaos, boosting the force of its crowbar with mystical abilities to bring down entire structures. Upon encounter by Thor, Balder, and Sif, the villain employs his powers to send Balder and Sif back to Asgard.
In the ongoing clash between Thor and the Wrecker, it’s evident that Thor is outmatched by the enhanced might of the convenience store. Later in Asgard, Sif and Balder hasten to Odin, pleading for him to reinstate Thor’s full strength. However, still harboring resentment towards Thor due to past disobedience, Odin declines to aid his son, believing he has not yet fully atoned for his transgressions.
The narrative carries on through multiple subsequent installments, with a stronger emphasis on the character of Wrecker compared to Loki, but it’s worth noting that Loki does make an appearance as well.
14. Dark Reign: The Cabal
Writer(s): Various
Artist(s): Various
Publication Date: June 2009
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’m eagerly diving into the gripping narrative saga known as “The Cabal”, part of the Dark Reign imprint. In this intriguing tale, Loki assumes the guise of Lady Sif in a fascinating twist that aligns with the contemporary narrative of the Marvel universe during that period. A multitude of talented writers have woven together an engrossing tapestry, with individual tales dedicated to each member, revealing their identities and motivations.
Despite making appearances in nearly every tale, it’s “Dinner with Doom” that particularly delves into Lady Loki’s character and examines her role within the Dark Reign series.
13. The Mighty Thor (vol. 1) #348-353
Writer(s): Walter Simonson
Artist(s): Walter Simonson
Publication Date: October 1984 – March 1985
Roger successfully halts Malekith’s attempt to open the coffin for a while. Balder learns about the Norns and discovers his significant role in the grand scheme of things. He also witnesses how a single action from an individual can ripple throughout the whole world. In the end, Thor escapes the pit, teaming up with Roger to vanquish Malekith for good.
In the realm of Asgard, the Warriors Three gather forces for battle. Meanwhile, Thor is preoccupied by Melodi, allowing Malekith to seize Rogers’ weapon and hurl it at a magical box, shattering it. This causes an intense cold that halts a portal, enabling Surtur to break through and invade our world. Following the demolition of the Ancient Winter Box, a strange chill sweeps across Midgard. Suspicious of Melodi’s actions, Rogers believes she is plotting something, but she employs magic to keep him from revealing this to Thor.
Agnar and Balder make their way back to Asgard where they share with Odin the vision that Balder experienced. Meanwhile, Thor brings Malekith into the fold, prompting Odin to imprison him without a chance of escape. During his confinement, Odin shares the details of the upcoming challenge, speaking about Surtur, their siblings, and the emergence of the Odin power. The impending war is discussed as well. In preparation for this battle, Odin summons Ray Bill back to Asgard via Odin Beta’s call.
This version maintains the same information but attempts to provide a more conversational and easy-to-understand style, while also using a consistent verb tense throughout the paragraph.
In the expanse of Vigrid, where all the warriors have assembled, Odin devises a battle strategy. While Odin and Heimdall remain in Asgard, Balder is tasked with seeking aid from Karnilla. Frigga is instructed to ensure the safety of the children. The mission for everyone is to travel to Midgard to confront Surtur and the Sons of Muspel. Thor swiftly heads off to warn the Avengers. Simultaneously, the onslaught commences against Manhattan.
Karnilla warns Balder that she’ll assist him only if he vows loyalty solely to her. With the Asgardians joining the fray, Amora struggles to persuade Lorelei, who remains unwilling to aid. When the Sons of Muspel ignite the city, Thor instigates a rainstorm to extinguish the flames. Regrettably, this is precisely what Surtur intended. As the rain subsides, Bifrost comes into view. The instant Thor discerns that Surtur has vanished, the Gjallerhorn will be heard. The warriors of Asgard and the Avengers battle against Surtur’s troops, losing ground until the 82nd Airborne arrives to help.
This version maintains the original’s flow while using simpler language and making the meaning clearer.
In the realm of Asgard, Thor journeys to confront Surtur after he overpowers Heimdall. Meanwhile, Roger Willis and Human Torch venture to England to halt an impending frost before it reaches the coffin. Within Asgard, a troll obstructs Frigga as she guides the young ones. Back on Earth, fragments of paint scatter due to Surtur’s destruction of Bifrost. Enraged, Sif mobilizes the Einherjar to execute Bill’s strategy. Thor attempts to fight Surtur with powerful blows but fails. Surtur emerges victorious and proceeds toward Asgard, leaving only Odin to stand against him.
* Thor visits Asgard to combat Surtur, who has triumphed over Heimdall. Simultaneously, Roger Willis and Human Torch go to England to prevent a winter that’s approaching the coffin. Inside Asgard, Frigga faces an obstacle from a troll as she directs the children. In the meantime, shards of paint float around due to Surtur wrecking Bifrost on Earth. Infuriated, Sif summons the Einherjar to follow Bill’s plan. Thor tries to defeat Surtur with strong punches but fails. Surtur overpowers him and moves toward Asgard, where only Odin remains as a barrier.
In Asgard, Surtur seeks the Eternal Flame that Odin and his siblings swiped at the dawn of existence. A clash between Surtur and Odin disrupts the Nine Realms. Meanwhile, Mr. Fantastic devises a strategy in New York to seize Demon’s Portal. Simultaneously, Roger intends to locate the coffin and restore it to halt the wintry tempests. The Human Torch guards against demons as Roger embarks on his mission. Meanwhile, back in New York City, Sif guides the Einherjar into Bill’s ambush, while Tyr and Skurge command their forces to annihilate the demons.
While Bill and Mr. Fantastic secure the door and lock it behind us, I find myself back in Asgard, where Surtur is taken aback by Odin’s might and summons the winter to halt him. Meanwhile, the young Asgardians devise a strategy to vanquish the troll. Back on earth, we, the heroes, stride through the door to confront the demons at their entry point into our dimension.
Previously in England, Roger had just one remaining item, yet he didn’t utilize it; instead, he was utterly paralyzed by fear. However, all traces of ice, snow, and cold vanished mysteriously, summoning Surtur to Asgard. Since the frost disappeared, the dark elves once again roamed freely within this realm. In Asgard, Surtur utilized the cold to imprison Odin completely, while Surtur himself approached the Eternal Flame and ignited the Twilight Sword. With Thor and Odin absent, Surtur attempted to ignite the Twilight Sword in the Eternal Flame, but nothing responded.
This version maintains the original narrative’s structure while using simpler, more conversational language that is easy to read and understand.
In a surprising confession, I, Loki, unveil that I was the one who concealed the genuine blaze and substituted it with an illusion. Engaging in an exhilarating pursuit, I, Loki, engaged Surtur in combat, leading him on a merry chase until he, in turn, discovered the true flame. Back in England, my comrade Roger and the Human Torch managed to evade the elves and make their way back home. After completing the final puzzle, I, Roger, closed the lid, causing the winter that Odin had been trapped within to be sealed away once more in the Casket.
As a cinephile, I must say that the revival of Thor was nothing short of spectacular! The epic confrontation between father and sons against Surtur was a sight to behold. Meanwhile, on Earth, Beta Ray Bill and our heroic team successfully vanquished the last remnants of demons.
In the climactic battle, Surtur and Odin went toe-to-toe, their struggle leading them both to plunge into the abyss of Muspelheim. Fortunately, as they tumbled, the chasm miraculously sealed itself shut, ensuring that their battle would not be repeated. A thrilling end to an unforgettable cinematic experience!

In the past, I, Loki, was apprehended by my brother Thor and imprisoned on Asgard’s Isle of Silence, where my bodily form remained confined. Yet, my thoughts transcended those boundaries, allowing me to roam the earth in a spectral form, seeking vengeance. One day, I found myself face-to-face with Thor, disguised as Dr. Donald Blake. Instead of attacking him, I decided that defeating him when he was not his godly self would yield no satisfaction.
After tireless searching, Loki eventually encounters the Hulk and devises a wicked scheme to deceive Blake into turning into Thor. He conjures an illusion of dynamite on a nearby railroad bridge’s tracks. The Hulk spots the fake explosives and attempts to remove them, inadvertently demolishing the bridge instead. Moments later, a train hurtles towards the debris on the tracks. With great courage, the Hulk maintains the tracks until the train passes over safely, then the bridge collapses beneath it.
Regrettably, Loki’s scheme has already been executed, resulting in harm that cannot be undone. In the ensuing hours, news outlets shared accounts of the Hulk being inactive once more, prompting a manhunt. Left stunned, Rick Jones perused the article and convened with the Teen Brigade to seek assistance in locating the Hulk and unveiling the truth behind his absence.
1) Attempts were made to reach out to the Fantastic Four, however, Loki interfered with the communication and directed it towards Don Blake instead. In response, he transformed into Thor to assist the Teen Brigade. Meanwhile, Loki was unaware that Ant-Man, Wasp, and Iron Man also received the signal and traveled to help as well. Unfortunately, the Teen Brigade were disheartened when the Fantastic Four didn’t respond to their message only to later receive a reply. The Fantastic Four explained they were preoccupied with another issue, but they presumed that other superheroes might have been alerted by their distress call.
Out of nowhere, Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Wasp appear. Loki soon discerns that these heroes are interfering with his schemes by deceiving Thor into thinking the Hulk is present through an illusion. When he confronts this false “Hulk”, Thor recognizes it’s not genuine and immediately suspects Loki. He then hurries back to Asgard to challenge his brother directly.
In the meantime, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Wasp join forces with Ant-Man’s ants to locate Hulk. He disguises himself as a robot named Mechano in a circus. They attempt to apprehend him by causing the ground to cave in, dropping a heavy steel cylinder on him, and trying to ensnare him in a net. However, the cunning Hulk manages to break free from the circus. Iron Man persists in the pursuit, but the Hulk immobilizes Iron Man’s battery before making his escape while Iron Man fixes it. Meanwhile, Thor seeks Odin’s approval to visit Loki on the Isle of Silence for interrogation purposes in Asgard.
Odin concurs yet cautions about his potential involvement in the dispute between the two siblings. As Thor breaks through a cloud of fog, he encounters traps set by Loki. Initially, he narrowly avoids getting ensnared by a cluster of roots that could have toppled him. Then, a volcano explodes, spewing globules of volatile gas that can diminish the power of any deity. Thor manages to evade it by diving into the ocean. On the island, Loki finds Thor’s vacant ship and ponders incredulously if Thor has ever been vanquished.
In an unexpected turn, I found myself face-to-face with the mighty Thor, who seemingly rose from the ocean depths. In a ploy to distract me, he hurled Mjolnir at Loki, but instead, he swiftly constructed an icy barricade. Loki, in a cunning move, summoned a rock giant intent on dragging Thor beneath the earth. At the brink of defeat, Thor called forth a thunderbolt from his hammer, momentarily blinding the troll and loosening its grip. With fury coursing through him, Thor retaliated by hurling Mjolnir once more at Loki, who had artfully created illusions of himself to disorient me.

11. Thor (vol. 1) #364-366
Writer(s): Walter Simonson

Publication Date: February – April 1986
As the Althing approaches, the Asgardians grow curious about where Thor has vanished. He’s on Earth now, transformed into a frog, but his warrior spirit remains undiminished. If a rat dares to attack him, he can quickly defend himself. Thor makes friends with Puddlegulp, which eventually introduces him to King Glugwort. Meanwhile, Hildy and the other children discover a mystery called Twilight, and Loki seems to be involved in some way.
Thor and Puddlegulp make it just in time to join forces with others for a chase after Ratso and some additional frogs, but they arrive too late to prevent the death of their king. Convincing Thor to aid them against the rats, the other frogs present their case, as he has already devised a strategy. Meanwhile, back in Asgard, the children share news about Twilight with Heimdall, causing him to suspect that Loki’s deceit might run even deeper than previously thought.
Or, more informally:
1. Thor and Puddlegulp show up as Ratso and his gang are on the move, but they miss their chance to save the king. The other frogs manage to persuade Thor to team up against the rats because he already has a battle plan ready. Meanwhile, in Asgard, the kids fill Heimdall in about Twilight, and he’s starting to worry that Loki might be playing a more intricate trick on them.
At the Althing assembly, the High Chieftain invites the descendants of Odin to present themselves. Without delay, Loki appears, chuckling self-deprecatingly over Thor’s conspicuous absence. However, it isn’t long before the God of Thunder makes his entrance.
1. With the exception of Piper, who swiftly seized control over Thor’s amphibian forms, Thor’s strategy for hunting alligators within the sewers proved successful. To support Thor in his struggle against rats among the frogs, he directs the alligators to emerge from their underground lair. Meanwhile, Loki grows suspicious of the Thor seen at the Althing and tails him along with Heimdall to Heimdall’s residence.
2. Although Piper took command over Thor’s transformed amphibians, his plan for seeking alligators in sewers proved effective, apart from that. To help frogs fight rats, he guided alligators to the surface. Back in Asgard, Loki started to question the authenticity of the Thor spotted at the Althing and shadowed him together with Heimdall to Heimdall’s dwelling.
3. In the sewers, Thor managed to find the alligators, except for when Piper took control over his amphibian forms. To assist frogs in their conflict against rats, he led the alligators up to the surface. Meanwhile, Loki began to doubt the true identity of the Thor that appeared at the Althing and trailed him along with Heimdall to Heimdall’s home.
4. Thor was successful in locating the alligators in the sewers, except for when Piper took control over his amphibian bodies. To aid frogs in their fight against rats, he directed the alligators to the surface. Back in Asgard, Loki started having doubts about the genuine Thor at the Althing and followed him with Heimdall to Heimdall’s abode.
5. In the sewers, Thor found alligators except for when Piper took control over his amphibian forms. To help frogs fight rats, he led the alligators out of their underground lair. Meanwhile, Loki grew suspicious of the true identity of the Thor at the Althing and followed him with Heimdall to Heimdall’s house.
1. Alligators quickly devour the rats, while in Asgard Loki unearths that the pretender Thor is indeed Harokin. Once Thor departs from the Frogs, Puddlegulp hinders him and whispers that Thor conceals a secret. Thor then revisits the alleyway to retrieve Mjolnir, transforming into a thunder frog. The transformed Thor returns to Asgard.
2. The alligators finish off the rats swiftly, meanwhile in Asgard Loki realizes that the disguised Thor is actually Harokin. After leaving the Frogs, Puddlegulp obstructs Thor and hints that Thor is keeping a secret. Thor then goes back to the alley and grabs Mjolnir, turning into a thunder frog. The transformed Thor then returns to Asgard.
3. Alligators gobble up rats in no time, and Loki finds out in Asgard that the fake Thor is Harokin. Thor departs from the Frogs, but Puddlegulp blocks his path, suggesting that Thor hides something. Thor retrieves Mjolnir from the alleyway, turning into a thunder frog, and later returns to Asgard as such.
4. The alligators consume the rats in short order, and Loki learns in Asgard that Harokin is actually the disguised Thor. Thor separates from the Frogs, but Puddlegulp stands in his way, indicating that there’s a secret about Thor. Thor then picks up Mjolnir in the alley, transforming into a thunder frog and returning to Asgard shortly after.
5. Alligators finish off rats quickly, as Loki uncovers in Asgard that Harokin is actually the hidden Thor. After parting ways with the Frogs, Puddlegulp stops Thor, hinting at a secret he keeps. Thor then goes back to the alley and takes Mjolnir, transforming into a thunder frog, before returning to Asgard.
6. The alligators devour the rats rapidly, while Loki discovers in Asgard that Harokin is the true Thor. Leaving the Frogs behind, Puddlegulp impedes Thor and suggests he has something to hide. Thor then heads back to the alley and grabs Mjolnir, turning into a thunder frog and returning to Asgard as such.
Volstagg carries the ailing Gunnhild as they journey towards Twilight. Meanwhile, at the Althing, Loki seizes the replica Mjolnir and hurls it aside to convince the crowd of its significance. Just then, Frog Thor bursts in and captures Loki. In an attempt to resist, Loki aims to transform Thor into a frog, but this only enrages Thor further, causing him to attack even more fiercely.
Vostogg stumbles upon a colossal device draining power from Twilight, leaving him lightheaded and inadvertently triggering an avalanche that topples the machine and the sword. Once the machine is demolished, Hildy’s illness vanishes, and Thor regains his composure. Upon their arrival, the remaining Asgardians find Loki attempting to salvage the situation. However, when Thor hurls him at Mjolnir, causing him to fall, Loki’s strategies crumble apart.
As I pen my thoughts on this cinematic spectacle, let me share with you an intriguing revelation from the film: Thor himself declares his intention to abdicate the throne, advocating instead for the honor of his brother, Balder.

Loki journeyed to Las Vegas to assist his daughter Hela, who is actually female Loki. Hela requires Loki’s aid in mastering time travel, a feat she can accomplish because of her unique circumstances. Hela restores Loki to his former self, as the son of Laufey. Hela remarks that his restored form looks familiar to her, and they collaborate to send him back to the past of Jotunheim.
Upon arrival, he meets the Frost Giants and shares his strategy with them. In return, they provide him with a cloak, and by means of a spell, he transforms Bor into snow. Subsequently, he assumes Bor’s form to chase after Odin, instructing him to take on a child from a warrior whom he will slay in combat. He pays a visit to his younger self, imparting knowledge about how to alter his life drastically and eliminate his father Laufey in the process.
Ultimately, Loki goes back to the current time, and Hela informs him that she has now realized whose body he was concealing – it’s Sif’s. This game is risky, but in the long run, it will shatter Thor and all the other Asgardians following him. Following this revelation, Loki resumes his form as Sif and sets off on his journey back to Asgard.
9. Thor & Loki: Double Trouble
Writer(s): Mariko Tamaki
Artist(s): Gurihiru
Publication Date: May 2021 – ongoing
This running comic book sequence presents a set of self-contained tales starring Thor and Loki, filled with humorous escapades. Unlike the more solemn narratives that involve these characters, these stories carry a lighter tone. They can be likened to an anthology series, but are crafted in a way that suits younger audiences, as evidenced by the art of Gurihiru.
8. “X-Men: The Asgardian Wars”
Writer(s): Chris Claremont
Artist(s): Various
Publication Date: November 1990
A one-eyed individual named Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor lead a team consisting of American and Canadian scientists to the Arctic Circle after their aircraft gets hit by an unidentified enemy. Meanwhile, during her training session in the Danger Room, Rachel Summers has a psychic vision of this event. This unexpected occurrence within the Danger Room puts the X-Men in a tough spot as they try to manage the situation. Rachel suspects that this incident is linked to Shaman, a member of Alpha Flight, who is dealing with conflicts among her own team members at the moment.
Suddenly, without any prior indication, the goddess Snowbird stands before him, gravely wounded. Before Shaman could tend to Snowbird, Rachel Summers assaults him and his companions. The X-Men then intervene, aiding Alpha Flight, while Professor Xavier successfully soothes Rachel. As Snowbird recovers, she discloses that the plane was brought down by Cyclops by the time it was her.
This version maintains the original’s narrative flow but is written in a more conversational and easy-to-understand manner.
1. The two superhero groups opt for teaming up to locate Cyclops and the missing researchers. Simultaneously, Loki, the Norse deity, consults with hidden figures about his ongoing scheme to present a compelling gift to mankind that they won’t be able to resist. Wolverine and Heather Hudson recall that Snape and Northstar had a deep conversation.
2. The two superhero squads agree on joining forces to find Cyclops and the absent scientists. At the same time, Loki, a Norse god, consults with shady individuals about his ongoing strategy to present humanity with an unrefusable gift. Wolverine and Heather Hudson are reminded of a heartfelt chat between Snape and Northstar.
3. The two superhero crews make a pact to collaborate on locating Cyclops and the scientists who went missing. Meanwhile, Loki, a Norse god, meets with secretive figures to discuss his plan to offer humanity something they can’t turn down. Wolverine and Heather Hudson recall an emotional conversation between Snape and Northstar.
4. The two superhero groups choose to unite in their search for Cyclops and the lost scientists. Concurrently, Loki, a Norse god, collaborates with hidden entities about his scheme to provide humanity with an irresistible offering. Wolverine and Heather Hudson are reminded of a heartfelt exchange between Snape and Northstar.
5. The two superhero teams make a joint decision to track down Cyclops and the missing researchers. Simultaneously, Loki, a Norse god, collaborates with concealed entities about his plan to present an enticing offer to mankind they won’t be able to reject. Wolverine and Heather Hudson are reminded of a heartfelt talk between Snape and Northstar.
6. The two superhero teams decide to combine efforts to locate Cyclops and the missing scientists. In parallel, Loki, a Norse god, collaborates with unseen entities about his plan to make an appealing offer to humanity they can’t refuse. Wolverine and Heather Hudson are reminded of a heartfelt dialogue between Snape and Northstar.
Upon stumbling upon an extraordinary, seemingly otherworldly palace, the teams descend and find themselves welcomed by a healed Cyclops – no longer requiring a shield for his blinding optic bursts. A bewildered band of heroes trails Cyclops into the fortress, where he presents them to scientists and his spouse, all of whom have undergone transformations and possess extraordinary abilities.
In a heartfelt confession, I unveil my extraordinary ability to mend and heal, showcasing this gift as I restore Aurora, Sasquatch, Rogue, and Puck from their afflictions. As Shaman observes Snowbird’s absence from our safe haven, he urges me to employ these powers for her recovery. With a heavy heart, Wolverine ventures out to find my cherished friend, accompanied by two knowledgeable companions. Yet, deep within, I can’t shake the feeling that it might be too late.
At a grand gathering, members of X-Men and Alpha Flight express their personal thoughts about the extraordinary abilities they possess, which could potentially mend our world. It’s at this social event that Madelyne announces she is expecting a son. Upon hearing this news, Rachel reacts with fear and flees. Kitty and an agitated talisman pursue her while Loki watches over Talisman closely.
At this point in time, our heroes are escorted to the Magic Spring, a place where people gain their abilities. Heather dives into the spring and emerges with the courage needed to guide when the shaman’s medicine bag gets out of hand, unleashing demons. Once the sack and demons have been dealt with, Madelyne informs us that their healing powers prove ineffective on the Shaman, who is now on his deathbed.

The loud sound stirs Mr. and Mrs. Hulkling and Wiccan’s sleep inside the building; Hulkling dashes in to find out who it is, but Loki vanishes and Mrs. America takes flight. Meanwhile, Wiccan discovers a moment in space-time before Hulkling’s mother was slain and replaces his own mother with her instead.

4. Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers
Writer(s): Robert Rodi
Artist(s): Esad Ribic
Publication Date: April 2011
Initially, Karnilla instructed Loki to slay Thor due to a pact they’d struck, though Loki felt reluctant about this agreement. The majority of Asgardians were unaware of it. However, Thor was the exceptional one who displayed brotherly affection and regarded him as kin.
In the second segment, Loki endures taunts from Sif, confined within a cell adjacent to Thor’s. Loki thinks that Sif mirrors Odin’s laziness, an observation he made earlier, prompting Sif to retort back with distaste.
In the third installment of the series, there’s a conversation between our characters where Balder discloses an intriguing revelation – no reincarnation of Loki has ever ruled Asgard. This shocking truth sends chills down Loki’s spine. Later on, Loki encounters his true birth mother, Farbauti Laufeyson, who he had presumed was long deceased.
In the last segment, it becomes clear that instead of killing Thor, Loki aims to govern Asgard jointly with his brother. However, whether this plan is successful remains uncertain, as the story concludes on a suspenseful note when Loki encounters Thor who breaks free from imprisonment and uses Mjolnir to overpower Loki.
3. Vote Loki
Writer(s): Christopher Hastings
Artist(s): Various
Publication Date: August—November 2016
Loki, the trickster god from Asgard, is considering adding “President of the United States” to his list of titles. While it’s unusual to see him running for public office, his charming demeanor and eloquent speech could make this election more intriguing. However, it’s likely that there’s a hidden agenda at play, leading Loki to pursue this position.
Presidential hopeful Loki Laufeyson finds himself in a challenging position as he grapples with the demands of campaign activities. Not only does he face skepticism about his eligibility, but recent allegations suggest that his Super P.A.C., instead of being a political action committee, is actually a cult led by him. As a presidential candidate, it’s crucial to engage with your voters, and Loki’s popularity among the American people has raised eyebrows due to its intensity.
During times of crisis in Latveria, Loki uses the situation to demonstrate his presidential prowess, leaving opponents behind. It appears that chaos in the country is somehow benefiting him, as if it were orchestrated. But surely, Loki wouldn’t purposefully create a national disaster just for some positive media attention, would he?
As Election Day draws near, the excitement for Loki is palpable; however, Nisa Contreras remains skeptical. From the beginning, she had a gut feeling about Loki that didn’t sit well with her. Eventually, she uncovered evidence to convince others that Loki may not be as flawless as he appears.
2. “Trust Me”
Writer(s): Al Ewing
Artist(s): Lee Garbett
Publication Date: February – June 2014
Currently, Thor is wounded by Loki’s sword thrust. Earlier in the day, Loki’s shower time in an apartment was disrupted by the arrival of the All-Mother, who tasked him with something important. This unexpected encounter prompted Loki to scale the Avengers Tower using his Seven League boots and employ a vanishing cloak to remain hidden from the Avengers’ view.
Indoors, Thor exhibits an uncommon aggression, demanding mead from Jarvis. His gaze falls on Loki, who is gazing out the window, prompting Thor to assault him. Loki’s tumble attracts Hawkeye and Black Widow’s attention, and a grappling hook halts his fall before he hits the ground. Yet, this maneuver places Loki in the midst of the Avengers.
When queried by Thor, Loki openly confesses that he acts on behalf of the All-Mother before steering the conversation towards the incident when Tony Stark replicated him, thus enraging Thor and enabling Loki’s escape. Hawkeye’s efforts to thwart him are unsuccessful as a result of Loki’s magical deception, which leads the Arrow of the Archers to strike Bruce Banner instead.
In the midst of diversion, Loki makes his way towards the Avengers’ database, utilizing it to gather all data about him that the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and others have accumulated. Once he has this information, he swiftly erases it, as stories with a heavy metaphysical influence tend to pull Loki towards wickedness, which is something he wants to steer clear of.
During that span of time, the Avengers eventually catch up with him. Thor suggests killing Loki and attempts to do so. At this critical juncture, he can no longer wield Mjolnir, which enables Loki to dodge Thor and stab him instead. This action triggers unusual energies to erupt from Thor’s body.
In a brief flashback, we learn why Loki attacked Thor: Following his fight with Malekith the Accursed, something sinister took hold of him, causing Thor to grow increasingly aggressive, haughty, and violent. To confront this altered Thor, Loki retrieves Gram, the sword of Sigurd, a weapon that compels those it wounds to experience the raw truth.
The device functions effectively, ridding Thor of the pollution, which is then swiftly enclosed in a unique jar that Loki had on hand. However, his joy is cut short as the Hulk delivers an unexpected blow, knocking him unconscious. Shortly afterward, Thor and Loki engage in conversation within a cell.
Thor ponders over his past tale of pride and questions if he’s truly changed from it. Loki soothes him, and they enjoy a drink together before Loki’s imminent departure. Later, Loki unveils the sealed wrongdoings of the All-Mother, who outlines her service terms; with each task accomplished, one of Loki’s misdeeds is erased from Asgard’s records.
In an attempt to prevent her from doing so, Loki cautions the All-Mother, especially Frigga, against opening the container. However, he is instructed to depart instead. Eventually, the container is opened and the contamination assumes a recognizable shape – that of a more malevolent Loki, an older version of him. This Loki appears with the intent of discussing future events.
1. “Fear Itself”
Creators: Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker
Illustrators: Stuart Immonen and Scot Eaton
Release Period: April to October, the year 2011
In the heart of World War II, under Hitler’s command, the Red Skull carried out a ritual to summon the hammer of Skadi from another realm, which materialized over Antarctica. However, he couldn’t manage to lift or awaken it; instead, he asked the Thule Society to construct a fortress as protection and concealment for the enigmatic artifact.
In time, Sin, daughter of Red Skull, working alongside Baron Zemo, managed to retrieve The Book of the Skull – an ancient text detailing the whereabouts of a mystical hammer. Amidst global unease and dread, the heroes have reclaimed their strength in the Marvel Universe. However, the mistrust that ordinary people harbor towards them following the Civil War, the Skrull Invasion, the Dark Reign of Norman Osborn, and the recent collapse of Asgard during the Siege, has sparked a profound fear. This fear, if left unchecked, could engulf everything.
In a chilling turn of events, Red Skull’s daughter, Sin, unearthed the enigmatic Sea Serpent from his watery tomb, deep within the Mariana Trench. With the Serpent’s mystical hammer bestowed upon her, Sin was metamorphosed into his messenger, Skadi. The Serpent proclaims himself as the “Prime Progenitor,” and with
He summons the Powerful, triggering seven additional celestial Mallets to descend worldwide. Whoever wields one becomes an indomitable force of devastation, laying waste to all around in the name of the Serpent. Upon discovering they’ve fled, Odin and the Asgardians depart Earth to prepare and ignite the planet, ultimately annihilating the Serpent.
As a die-hard movie buff, I’d rephrase it like this: When I tried to step in, the Serpent unveils to Thor that he’s none other than Odin’s brother and the rightful, exiled king of Asgard. Later on, the Avengers mobilize to protect mankind, but the Serpent swiftly overpowers them all.
The conflict eventually escalates into a battle between The Worthy and Captain America’s squad; initially, The Worthy show superior strength and endurance, but not for long. Soon, Stark and his group arrive at the battlefield, brandishing Asgardian weapons and temporarily empowered by Odin’s blessing or magical enchantment, making them indestructible for a while.
Alongside the group, Thor appears and promptly sets out to locate the Serpent. With a wave of his powers, the serpentine creature morphs into an enormous wyvern. However, Thor encounters difficulties and gets mortally venomous-wounded, causing Mjolnir to drop. Subsequently, Captain America picks it up and realizes he can wield its power, rendering him as potent as Skadi.
Across Yggdrasil, the Aesir prepared to invade Earth, but they arrived too late: the Serpent was slain with a powerful strike to its head, and Thor collapsed to the ground, now succumbing to his wounds. With nine deliberate strides towards his father, he exhausted his strength and perished in front of all his kin and comrades. Recognizing that the prophecy had unfolded, the All-Father withdrew the enchanted hammers from the Worthy, scattering them across different regions to prevent anyone from locating them.
Jane Foster and all the gods’ friends are informed about the incident and swiftly make their way to the scene, assisting in the preparation of the funeral pyre. The next day brings some news: Odin feels remorseful for permitting his brother to harm his family, so he decides to remain in Asgard until the end of time to keep watch over his deceased brother. Instead, his wife Frigg, Gaia, and Iðunn will stay on Earth to support the Asgardians during this difficult time.
A week following Thor’s demise, two pivotal incidents unfold: Sin is discovered by a band of extraterrestrials who restore her health, having suffered from the loss of Skadi’s spirit. They successfully persuade her to seek out her seven hammers, emphasizing that there is still much unfinished business.
Hulk, the one who shattered Nul’s hammer, grows weary of Bruce Banner’s persistent presence and finds a way to escape his mind. He leaves Banner stranded in a desert and ventures out on his own, aiming to confront the demon that had previously controlled him while also seeking Doctor Strange’s assistance.
