Remarkably, the climax of Doctor Who‘s Season 2 takes an unusual turn as Ncuti Gatwa’s character undergoes a transformation, becoming none other than Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler in a unique twist.
Spectators found themselves bewildered, puzzled, and seeking clarification, yet there was a surge of excitement – something the series hadn’t seen in quite some time.
Rumors Point to Desperation Behind the Scene
Actually, things might appear differently from what they seem on the surface. Whispers hint that this action wasn’t driven by storytelling as one might think (quite unexpectedly).
As a die-hard fan, I’ve heard whispers suggesting that Russell T Davies took an unexpected move, essentially pulling out all the stops in a desperate bid to persuade Disney to renew the series for a third season on Disney+. And apparently, Billie Piper was roped in, agreeing to return only as a gesture of goodwill.
Is Billie Piper Really the Next Doctor?
If it’s true that she isn’t planning to stay, then it might imply Billie Piper won’t continue as the 16th Doctor in the series.
Instead, as with previous regeneration episodes, the season finale did not explicitly identify her as the Doctor; in fact, past regeneration scenes have typically introduced the new actor playing the Time Lord character.
The scene was supposedly shot a couple of weeks back, with just a small group of the production team on set.
The Regeneration That Makes No Sense
If you are a Doctor Who fan, the Doctor regenerating into Rose makes absolutely no sense.
It doesn’t make logical sense for the Doctor to transform into the likeness of Rose, since after a regeneration, they are unaware of their new appearance. However, it appeared that the Doctor recognized himself as Rose Tyler.
A Gimmick to Save the Show—or the Budget?
Was this a genuine regeneration, or merely an impressive trick meant to generate artificial excitement and continue the financial success of Disney?
Was it that Russell T Davies requested assistance from the colleague who initially propelled his career, with the intention that a brief appearance might generate excitement and persuade Disney to extend the run of Doctor Who for an additional season?
Disney+ Reportedly Out After Ratings Flop
According to recent reports, the low viewership (the worst ever recorded in the show’s over 60-year run) seems to have led Disney to decide against renewing the series for a third season on their streaming platform, Disney+.
It’s well-known that Disney invested a hundred million dollars in Doctor Who, yet it didn’t attract many viewers. Interestingly, Disney has also reduced investments in its own brands like Marvel and Star Wars, which have experienced declines in viewership. Now, it appears Disney is planning to invest further in Doctor Who, despite the fact that its viewership is lower than both Marvel and Star Wars.
Could Russell T Davies Be Replaced?
It has been speculated that Disney might demand the removal of Russell T Davies as the showrunner for “Doctor Who” if they decide to renew it for a third season, due to their alleged dissatisfaction with the series.
If Season 3 airs on Disney+, there might be a change in the showrunner. However, would Billie Piper and Rose Tyler take over as the new Time Lord?
What’s Next for Doctor Who?
Additionally, there are whispers suggesting that the BBC might be seeking a fresh financier to carry on the show, potentially from Sony or Amazon.
It appears that if/when Doctor Who is renewed, the latest episodes might not air before 2027 at the earliest. Hooray for future adventures! (Geronimo!)
