The popular “Star Trek” movie series appears to be facing a standstill, as no new “Trek” film has been scheduled for release next year. This means it will mark a full decade since the last one was released, making it the longest gap between films in 45 years. Many fans are wondering where exactly the franchise hit a snag.
According to an article from Slashfilm, the potential reason could be traced back to a “Star Trek” video game released in 2013, which was connected to the film “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Although the movie didn’t perform well, the reception towards the game was even more unfavorable. This less-than-enthusiastic response might have contributed to a negative public perception of the film, potentially impacting the franchise’s overall success.
In the gap between J.J. Abrams’ 2009 “Star Trek” reboot/sequel and its sequel, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the games for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titled simply as “Star Trek” unfolded. Since actors like Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto voice their characters in this game, it can be considered part of the series’ canon. The crew of the Kelvin universe’s “Enterprise” encountered a classic adversary from the original series, the Gorn reptiles. Fortunately, the YouTube account “Global Gaming” recorded the gameplay last year, allowing you to watch a full walkthrough in the video below:
The Star Trek video game flopped, receiving both poor reviews and failing to make much money. This could have negatively impacted the movie Into Darkness, as it was released just days beforehand. However, Into Darkness did moderately well in North American cinemas. Unfortunately, it performed poorly overseas, which is typically a challenge for the Star Trek franchise. The exceptions are the U.K. and Germany, where Star Trek has had success on TV as well. Contrary to expectations, Into Darkness did not outperform the 2009 Star Trek film, which rejuvenated the franchise and was a significant box office hit at that time. A third film, Star Trek Beyond, was released three years later. Despite positive reviews, the combined impact of the game and Into Darkness resulted in relatively low box office earnings for this movie.
The 2013 Star Trek game has left an impact, as Alex Kurtzman – a writer/producer from the J.J. Abrams Kelvin universe films – is now overseeing the streaming Trek series. In Strange New Worlds, he reimagined the Gorn species from the ’60s show, making them a formidable adversary to the Federation. It appears that this approach to the Gorn in the 2013 game served as a trial run for a more successful execution in Strange New Worlds years later. In essence, we could say that the Star Trek reference was a sort of rehearsal for a better performance by Kurtzman in the following decade.
