Mark Hamill Says His Luke Skywalker Days Are Officially Behind Him

It’s unlikely that you will see Mark Hamill reprising his role as a Force Ghost in upcoming “Star Wars” films anytime soon or perhaps ever again. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Hamill made it clear that his time as Luke Skywalker has come to an end. Sharing the sentiments of many “Star Wars” fans, Hamill feels that the franchise should focus on new stories rather than relying too heavily on the Skywalker Saga’s past. Here is what he said about a potential return as Luke:

I’m deeply thankful to George Lucas for giving me the opportunity to be involved in it during its early days, those modest times when he referred to “Star Wars” as the “most expensive low-budget film ever made.” Honestly, we never anticipated that it would evolve into an enduring franchise and a cultural icon. However, my time has passed, and I’m grateful for the experience, but I believe the focus should now be on the future and the new characters they’re creating.

Hamill humorously commented by saying, “Luke vanished in [The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind. And I’m not going to reappear as a naked force ghost.” However, it’s clear he was joking since Luke actually showed up as a fully dressed Force Ghost in The Rise of Skywalker. Despite any opinions about that film, the scene of Force Ghost Luke standing beside his “Space Sister” Carrie Fisher as Leia provides a fitting goodbye to the character.

In simpler terms, if a new movie centered around Rey is made, we had hoped to see a cameo of Luke as a Force Ghost. However, Mark Hamill seems to have ruled this out now. Future Star Wars movies might not feature Luke, but if R2-D2, C-3PO, and Chewbacca are absent, that would be surprising. If Hamill truly is done playing Luke, his last appearance in the canon would have been in “The Book of Boba Fett,” which may not have been the best way for him to end his character’s story. But no one will blame Mark Hamill for how “The Book of Boba Fett” turned out.
