James Cameron is stepping away from ‘Avatar’, at least for now, as he’s shifted his focus to another project. Specifically, his production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, has obtained the rights to “The Devils”, the latest novel by Joe Abercrombie, a British author. This book, released on May 6th, climbed to the top of the UK’s Sunday Times bestseller list and debuted at number 5 on the New York Times list in the U.S.
Cameron made the announcement on Facebook and will co-write the screenplay with Abercrombie.
What Cameron Says About The Devils
In simple terms, Cameron referred to the book as “a cleverly humorous horror journey” and “an intriguing, stylish, twisted tale set in an alternate medieval era.” He commended Abercrombie’s distinctive dark wit, complex morality, and “thrilling” storyline.
Cameron remarked, “Joe Abercrombie is at his absolute best in ‘The Devil’. This work showcases Abercrombie’s cynical portrayal of human nature, revealing its dark, self-serving aspects through characters that are far from human. Yet, Abercrombie never fails to offer glimmers of redemption, which make the story both thought-provoking and heartrending in the end.
Additionally, Cameron particularly appreciated “Best Served Cold” and the “Age of Madness” series, yet he mentioned that it was ultimately “The Devil’s” book that prompted him to take action.
A Visual, Cinematic Story
Cameron noted that Abercrombie’s writing is naturally suited for adaptation.
Joe’s writing style is quite film-like, often resembling scenes, and has a strong cinematic flow, he noted. I’m eagerly looking forward to exploring this further as I finish up on “Avatar: Fire and Ash“. It promises to be an exciting and fulfilling challenge for me.
Abercrombie on Working With Cameron
Abercrombie called the partnership a major moment in his career.
James Cameron has amazed audiences, including myself, for more than four decades by making the unimaginable come alive on film,” he stated. “He possesses an extraordinary ability to blend exhilarating action and visual spectacle with deeply emotional personal elements and narratives. I can’t imagine anyone else more suited to bring this peculiar and captivating book’s monster to life on screen.
