‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ to Feature Rare Full-Frame IMAX 1.43 Scenes

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled about Marvel’s next venture, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” This movie is poised to leave a lasting impression on the silver screen by including scenes captured in the expansive IMAX 1.43:1 aspect ratio. This makes it one of only two MCU films to leverage this format, with “Eternals” being the first, offering select sequences in the same ratio.

A 1.43:1 aspect ratio provides a vertical, more engrossing visual presentation than the widely-used 1.90:1 IMAX format found in numerous movies.

This style is often used in well-known movies like “Interstellar”, “The Dark Knight”, and “Oppenheimer” to strengthen their visual narratives.

If you’re finding it confusing, let me clarify: Unlike other IMAX films this year such as Mission Impossible and Superman which are standard 1.90 IMAX, Fantastic Four is a unique 1.43 IMAX experience, similar to Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, and Sinners.

Alongside the IMAX shots, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” incorporates scenes captured on both 16mm and 35mm film. This mix of film stocks gives the movie a unique visual feel and style, especially in the scenes portraying Reed Richards’ early life and astronaut adventures.

The scenes are arranged in a 4:3 aspect ratio, lending a nostalgic and personal atmosphere to the narrative, which seems fitting for both the era depicted and our preconceived ideas about its visual style.

As a fan, I’ve always admired Director Matt Shakman for his innovative approach to storytelling, particularly when it comes to manipulating aspect ratios. His work on ‘WandaVision’, for instance, showcases this unique skill wonderfully.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled for release on July 25, 2025.
