Indeed, it’s officially confirmed that Ncuti Gatwa has left the role of Doctor Who. The final episode of Season 2, which was broadcasted not long ago, included a regeneration scene, marking the end of his tenure in this iconic series.

Speaking about the last episode, titled “The Reality War,” Gatwa’s Doctor selflessly gives up his life to protect baby Poppy, the child of companion Belinda (Varada Sethu). As he passes away, his body begins transforming into radiant golden energy, eventually regenerating into Rose. Her initial words, filled with familiarity, are “Oh, hello!
Ncuti Gatwa responds
In an exclusive backstage video clip released on Saturday, Gatwa revealed that his departure had been prearranged all along.
Originally, we intended to complete this number of seasons because the role requires a considerable amount of your physical, emotional, and mental strength. The actors portraying the doctor are simply playing their roles; regrettably, we’re all human. I wish I could perform this role full-time for the rest of my life, given the energy and vitality it requires, but my knees suggest otherwise,” the actor shared, explaining the decision.
Gatwa also spoke with the BBC about his decision to leave.
When you’re chosen for a part, eventually you must return that prop – in this case, the Sonic Screwdriver – and your time comes to a close. But nothing quite readies you for that moment. This adventure has left an indelible mark on me, and I’ll carry this role with me always. It’s impossible to express the emotions of being cast as The Doctor, just as it’s hard to put into words the gratitude of being welcomed into such a cherished role that spans over six decades and is adored by millions worldwide.
Gatwa expressed, “Fans are the real stars and lifeblood of this series, and I am deeply appreciative to the Whoniverse and Whovians for embracing me and making this adventure so heartwarming. Each moment spent here has been a delight, but it’s now time to pass on the reins of that treasured blue box to another, allowing them to experience its magic just as I have. I will dearly miss it, yet forever be grateful for the memories and everyone who contributed to my Doctor journey.

Billie first entered the Whoniverse in 2005 as Rose Tyler, the cherished travel partner of the Doctor portrayed by Christopher Eccleston and subsequently David Tennant. Later on, Rose finds herself living in a different universe alongside a replica of the Tenth Doctor, which provides her with a content ending, albeit one that distances her from the primary Doctor and the principal timeline. An announcement also has yet to be made whether Disney+ will carry a third season.
