Karate Kid: Legends Is Not Cobra Kai Sequel, But Here’s How It’s Still Connected

2025 will see the arrival of “Karate Kid: Legends,” a fresh installment within the cherished Karate Kid series. This upcoming film brings back the characters Daniel LaRusso, portrayed by Ralph Macchio, and Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan, for the first time on screen together.

In the new film, we follow Daniel’s journey once more. He was initially introduced in the 1984 movie The Karate Kid, and later resurfaced in the popular Netflix series Cobra Kai, which ended its six-season run in February 2025. Now, an unexpected encounter brings Daniel face to face with Mr. Han, a kung-fu master who appeared in the 2010 reboot featuring Jaden Smith.

Macchio explained to The Hollywood Reporter, “This franchise consistently manages to get it just right when we put our hearts into it.” He also noted that linking Daniel and Mr. Han, who were both pupils of Mr. Miyagi, adds another layer to the expansive universe of The Karate Kid, creating a new ecosystem within it.

Legends isn’t a follow-up to Cobra Kai as we traditionally understand sequels, it shares the same storyline continuity. Director Jonathan Entwistle made this clear by stating that it’s not a Cobra Kai movie but rather another part of the larger narrative.

Three years following the Cobra Kai saga, a fresh protagonist emerges: Li Fong, portrayed by Ben Wang of American Born Chinese fame. Originating from Beijing, Li trains in martial arts under both Mr. Han and Daniel, having relocated to New York City.

Throughout Li’s adventure, viewers can look forward to the reappearance of an old acquaintance. Towards the closing moments of the movie, William Zabka makes a shocking guest appearance as Johnny Lawrence once more. Director Entwistle admitted that maintaining the secrecy around Zabka’s role was quite a challenge.

Macchio commended Zabka’s addition, expressing that “He delivers an outstanding performance in Cobra Kai, and he tips his hat to the iconic Johnny Lawrence with this role.
