Brainiac: The Thanos-Level Villain Set to Dominate James Gunn’s Superman Universe!

Brainiac continues to be joked about in connection with James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, and there’s a possibility that he could serve as a unifying element within the DC Universe, similar to how Thanos and the Infinity Stones played a pivotal role during Phase 1-3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

once more, Umberto Gonzalez, known for sharing exciting leaks in the past and currently writing for The Wrap, offers a fresh hint about Brainiac.

Last year, Gonzales hinted at Brainiac in Gunn’s Superman, and more recently, he has done so again by sharing a comic-style image accompanied by the eyes emoji on platform X.

Brainiac confirmed?

Last year, rumormonger Daniel RPK alleged that Brainiac was indeed a part of Superman, and he supposedly added this information to his “verified” section on his Patreon platform.

Another Reddit user allegedly shared some exclusive artwork, which they said depicted a Brainiac-operated drone. The description provided was that this drone had an intricate design.

Look at this intriguing tidbit! I’ve come across concept art that seems to depict a Brainiac Drone. Although it doesn’t explicitly prove that Brainiac is in the movie, his presence is hinted at. The drone’s design is unremarkable, just a standard gray robot with green accents. However, what makes me think it’s a Brainiac Drone is the presence of Brainiac’s distinctive forehead accessory on its head. So, it seems we have an interesting development to discuss!

Previously, I hinted that Dave Bautista might portray Brainiac, who famously appeared as Drax in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies within the Marvel universe.

More evidence Brainiac is James Gunn’s big bad of the DCU

What’s also interesting is that Gunn recently teased a big surprise role for Superman.

It’s worth noting that the terminated “Superman & Lois” television show actually intended to incorporate Brainiac, an interesting twist. Unfortunately, the series came to an end with the advent of Gunn’s fresh take on the Man of Steel film, raising questions about timing.

In addition to his statements, Gunn hinted at a major antagonist tying together the DC Universe or perhaps a specific narrative. It’s possible that Brainiac is this unifying villain, as suggested in the ‘Lanterns’ storyline where Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigate a puzzling case within the Heartland of America. One might wonder, why would the Green Lanterns be involved in such a scenario?

Absolutely, Supergirl shares a rich past with Brainiac, and as for the “Supergirl” film, it’s currently being worked on.

Indeed, Brainiac has clashed with Supergirl on several occasions in the comics, frequently endangering both Kryptonian heritage and Earth itself. Given his potential role as the main antagonist across various DCU productions such as Superman, Lanterns, and potentially Supergirl, he could very well become a threat on par with Thanos in Gunn’s emerging universe.

* Superman is set to debut on July 11th.
* It’s believed that Lanterns will premiere in early 2026.
* Supergirl is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
