As a fan, I’ve found myself immersed in the world of “The Last of Us—Part II,” spending a considerable amount of time exploring Abby’s story and uncovering her hidden depths. It’s a challenging feat for a TV series to abruptly change perspectives midway through an episode, but the season two finale of “The Last of Us” took us on a dizzying dive into Abby’s perspective, suggesting that we might be in store for a whole new season from her point of view. However, during a press conference for season two, the showrunners Neil Druckmann and Carl Mazin were tight-lipped about the possibility of “The Last of Us” season three focusing on Abby. Yet, they did subtly hint that this could be the direction the show might take in the future. Neil Druckmann himself referred to the finale shift to Abby as a “promise of where we’re headed next.
Abby’s Final Scene is “A Promise” About The Last of Us Season 3
He discusses the decision to switch to Abby’s perspective in the final minute of season two of “The Last of Us”, saying, “We frequently consider what we are committing to our audience in terms of future developments. For instance, it was crucial for Craig in episode five that we depict Joel in the last scene because then there’s a hint about where we’re heading next. If we had ended the season elsewhere; I mean perhaps just a few moments prior, I believe that wouldn’t be a proper indication of what this series is really about. We’ll tell you, [laughs] the upcoming season will have an epic quality to it due to the events unfolding, but this other story will also be significant in relation to Joel, Ellie, and everything we’ve seen up until now.
When You Have a Kaitlyn Dever, You Use a Kaitlyn Dever
In line with our previous conversation, Craig Mazin hinted during his discussion on HBO’s The Last of Us series (including season three) that there’s more to the story we haven’t explored yet. He emphasized that Abby is the protagonist of her own narrative and, given the talent of Kaitlyn Dever, it seems likely we might see Abby’s perspective in Season Three. So, it appears that Abby could very well have a significant role in the upcoming season.
The Last of Us‘ Showrunners Won’t YET Commit to Whether Season 3 Will Feature More of Abby’s POV
However, when pressed to definitively verify, Mazin remained hesitant about guaranteeing that The Last of Us season three will indisputably present Abby as the primary point-of-view character.
He clearly stated he wouldn’t provide specific responses to the query regarding Ellie’s role in season three, since the series finale resembles the transition between Ellie and Abby’s narratives in “The Last of Us—Part II” game. The question asked if season three would focus on Abby’s perspective, similar to her part in the game, and whether the creators were ready to discuss the potential balance between their stories moving forward, as Gail might put it.
As a fervent admirer, I echoed, “I won’t be partaking… I won’t be participating in… nope. I recall when fans were inquiring about season two, they’d say, ‘And what about Joel?’ My response was… and when does he die? My response was, ‘Hold on, what do you mean when? You mean ‘if’ [LAUGHS]. The season… The season will unfold, and it will take its course, even if I thought I knew now exactly how it would unfurl, I’m seasoned enough to know that in two weeks, our understanding of how it should progress could shift dramatically.
As a devoted film enthusiast, let me share my thoughts: “Truth be told, these talented actresses – Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, and Isabela Merced – are far from finished stealing our hearts on the silver screen. And if you’ve been following the story closely, there are quite a few characters who are currently ‘resting in peace’. But that only means we haven’t seen their last act, my fellow cinemagoers! So, to answer the question everyone seems to be asking, I’m afraid I must decline [LAUGHS].
We Bet Abby WILL Be Our Next Perspective Character, Though
It’s quite possible that The Last of Us season three will feature an episode from Abby’s perspective. Although we can’t guarantee it just yet, the odds seem very high. Meanwhile, you can stream seasons one and two of The Last of Us on HBO Max at your convenience.
