On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Elisabeth Moss’ series The Handmaid’s Tale concluded with a thoughtful, eerie finale. This marked June Osborne’s (played by Moss) return to the burnt-down Waterford estate, completing her journey in a full circle.
In her former bedroom, June starts to document her harrowing journey within Gilead, speaking in much the same manner as Offred did at the beginning of the series. Her narrative, marked by pain and rebellion, transforms into her account – a testament that eventually becomes her enduring legacy.
Instead of fleeing, what they truly fear is discovering hidden paths within themselves, for we would go nowhere together. This cutting-edge revelation, she intones ominously.
June revisits the ruins of her tormented past
In the somber yet emotionally powerful series titled “The Handmaid’s Tale,” previously controlled Boston experiences liberation, and resistance triumphs in numerous former Gilead strongholds. However, instead of celebrating a victory, the final episode refrains from such exultation. Instead, June walks alone through a city blanketed by snow and bereft of a name – a landscape haunted by memories, sorrow, and ghostly apparitions. During her journey, she envisions meetings with her absent friends, Rita, Moira, and Emily, interweaving past experiences with the present, dreams with reality.
June’s solitude is alleviated by flashbacks: a sight of Emily, believed deceased for so long, operating covertly in Connecticut; an emotionally charged encounter with Serena Joy, now a displaced mother with no safe haven. Their bond finds a tentative resolution as they mutually forgive each other in a subtle gesture hinting at healing.
As some characters like Luke and Moira revel in the joy of Gilead’s downfall by dancing near bonfires and setting flags alight, June stands contemplatively by the fire. All she perceives is the future she has forfeited: a daughter, a partner, a regular life. Her sorrow and story remain incomplete.
with June, alone in a space that significantly impacted her life.
