Ryan Reynolds, known for his success with movies like Deadpool, particularly Deadpool and Wolverine, is aiming to extend his R-rated aspirations into a distant, star-studded cosmos.
Reynolds reveals he actually pitched Disney R-rated Star Wars.
What did Ryan Reynolds say about R-rated Star Wars?
Actor from Deadpool made a recent appearance on The Box Office podcast, where he disclosed that he proposed the concept of an adult-oriented Star Wars “project” to Disney.
In discussing ideas with Disney, he proposed, ‘How about creating an adult-oriented Star Wars series instead?’ He added, ‘It doesn’t need to revolve around traditional heroic characters. There are plenty of other character types that could be explored.’
As a movie enthusiast, I’m not proposing an R-rated Star Wars tale merely for graphic violence, harsh language, or sensationalism. Rather, I view the R-rating as a means to foster a more nuanced, adult emotional narrative – one that might be curtailed by PG-13 constraints.
He clarified, “I’m not suggesting an R-rating for profanity or explicit content, but rather as a covert means to evoke emotions. It often puzzles me why production companies are hesitant to take a chance on such emotionally charged content.
So does that mean Ryan Reynolds starring in an R-rated Star Wars project? Nope.
I’d prefer to contribute from the sidelines as a producer or writer, as taking on a different role might not align well with my skills and interests.
Reynolds clarified that he doesn’t wish to be directly involved in it, but rather produce, write, or work behind the scenes for projects like Star Wars. Such intellectual properties thrive on scarcity and unexpected twists. Although we don’t have scarcity with Star Wars due to Disney+, there’s still room to surprise viewers.
Would R-rated Star Wars work?
Initially, George Lucas developed Star Wars with 10-year-old boys in mind. However, it’s important to note that those young fans have grown up a bit. The latest serious Star Wars project, Andor, has recently released its second season and made it onto the Nielsen charts, outperforming Skeleton Crew, which didn’t chart due to the less-than-favorable response to The Acolyte.
In an exciting disclosure, the mastermind behind Andor, Tony Gilroy, has hinted at a chilling Star Wars-themed horror production that might even earn an R-rating.
What do you think? Should Star Wars go full R-rated or keep it more for kids?
What’s next from Star Wars?
Apart from the upcoming release of Andor Season 2, there’s also ongoing production for Ahsoka Season 2. The Mandalorian and Grogu, under Jon Favreau’s direction, will be out on May 22, 2026. Not too long ago, it was announced that Shawn Levy, famous for Deadpool and Wolverine, is directing Ryan Gosling in Star Wars: Starfighter, set to hit the screens on May 28, 2027.
What’s next for Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool?
Ryan Reynolds has previously shared that he’s working on an early-stage project for another Deadpool film, this time incorporating X-Men characters. There’s also a chance Deadpool might make an appearance in “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Secret Wars”. Hugh Jackman playfully addressed speculation, hinting that Wolverine could wipe out and annihilate everyone.
