1. Sword Art Online
Original Run: July 8, 2012 – September 20, 2020
Number of Episodes: 96
In 2022, Sword Art Online (SAO) becomes available – a massive multiplayer virtual reality role-playing game (VR MMORPG). This game is unique because of the NerveGear, a revolutionary helmet that allows players to fully immerse themselves in the game by directly stimulating their senses through brain manipulation. This means players can control their characters within the game using only their minds.
On November 6, 2022, SAO officially begins operation, but users find they can’t log out. The game’s creator, Akihiko Kayaba, unveils himself as a psychopath and explains that he has trapped them within the game: their only chance for freedom lies in reaching and passing the final level (symbolized by the 100th floor of the floating castle Aincrad, where the final boss resides). If they fail or attempt to remove the NerveGear forcefully, it will induce a coma through electric shocks directly targeting the brain.
The players are quickly admitted to hospitals and given artificial nutrition. Out of all those who heard Kayaba’s speech, there is Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya, one of the 1,000 beta testers who got an early peek at the game. Armed with past knowledge, Kirito dedicates himself to finishing the game by himself, but eventually, he forms a partnership with a player named Asuna whom he eventually falls for.
In the following two years, the main character uncovers Kayaba’s true identity within SAO, challenges him, and defeats him decisively, thereby liberating himself and the remaining alive players. But upon re-entering reality, Kirito learns that 300 SAO participants, including Asuna, have yet to regain consciousness. Guided by a clue suggesting that Asuna was detained in another virtual reality MMORPG named Alfheim Online (ALO), Kirito too dives into this game, where he serendipitously meets Leafa, who is actually Suguha’s cousin.

Here, I witnessed a thrilling battle between Celejia Upitiria, a beloved character, and a young girl in military attire shrouded in mystery.

In the anime No Game No Life, we follow siblings Sora and Shiro, who are exceptionally close and share an extraordinary bond in both their real lives and their virtual gaming exploits. Meanwhile, Shiro showcases an intellect far beyond the ordinary.
In the actual realm, I’m more inclined to solitude, shying away from social interactions, and often labeled as a hikikomori. Yet, within the virtual world of gaming, I find camaraderie as ‘White’, an enigmatic band of online gamers, oblivious to defeat, always emerging victorious in every game we engage in. Since our character account names are always blank spaces, I’m affectionately recognized by my peers as “The White One”.

Haruyuki “Haru” Arita, a short and heavy individual, grapples with low self-worth due to frequent bullying by some of his schoolmates.
Each day, Haru finds solace in logging into the school’s virtual realm to enjoy a game of solo squash, aiming to flee from life’s challenges. Remarkably, he continually breaks records and earns exceptional outcomes. One fateful moment catches the attention of “Kuroyukihime,” the vice president of the student council. Impressed by his skills, she extends an invitation to Haru, offering him Brain Burst – a clandestine method that appears to halt time by significantly accelerating one’s own brainwaves in the real world.
Regrettably, there’s a cap on how fast a person can go in Brain Burst, as each boost consumes points within the program. The quickest way to earn more points is by triumphing over other Brain Burst players in this virtual world multiplayer combat game (VRMMO). However, if a player’s score drops to zero, the Brain Burst software will automatically uninstall and prevent any future installations, effectively ending the ability to accelerate again. Noteworthy, each user can only distribute one copy of the game.

This digital realm forms the backdrop for the anime. When the character Tsukasa regains consciousness in this game, he can’t recall his past, and unlike other virtual characters, he perceives this virtual universe as authentic.
In simple terms, the character experiences sensations like pain, smells, and temperature. It won’t be long before it understands that it can’t quit the game and that it has extraordinary powers. Consequently, it quickly becomes hunted by the “Crimson Knights,” who claim to protect the game. Moreover, the character appears as a feline figure, which should not exist according to the game’s rules. In online games, those who cheat or hack are usually expelled.
As I’m cornered, a fierce battle erupts when they locate me. In the heat of the conflict, a monstrous figure steps in, shielding Tsukasa. This extraordinary intervention doesn’t just end the game’s red knight, but triggers a real-life epileptic seizure for the player controlling this character. With alarm bells ringing, everyone is urged to keep their distance from Tsukasa and the monster. Meanwhile, another faction is hatching a scheme to detach Tsukasa from the creature and apprehend him.

2015 saw a devastating fire that destroyed much of the data from the massively multiplayer online role-playing game “The World,” which boasted millions of players. From the salvaged data, “The World R:2” was developed and launched in 2016. In this new version, players can engage in combat with each other and form groups called guilds. At the onset of the game, player Haseo encounters hostile players who target inexperienced players for elimination. Fortunately, he is saved by Ovan and swiftly becomes a member of his guild, the Twilight Brigade.
The objective here is to locate and secure the six virus cores before the rival faction TAN manages to do so. As Haseo embarks on her journeys, she becomes acquainted with other members of the guild, some even in person. In a game assault, Shino, a fellow member from the Twilight Brigade, perishes within the game. Tragically, this results in Shino falling into a coma in real life. With cameras, drones, and scanners everywhere, Sibyl assesses individuals’ potential for criminality, known as their “Psycho-Pass.” If an individual strays too far from the societal norm, law enforcers from the Bureau of Public Security, along with their enforcer counterparts (individuals with unusually high Psycho-Pass ratings), are dispatched to apprehend these deviants. They then subject them to therapy, imprisonment, or lethal force to restore balance in this seemingly perfect society. As a movie critic, I find myself both captivated and disturbed by the dystopian vision presented in Psycho-Pass.
