As children, we all found joy in watching movies and cartoons, eagerly anticipating the new worlds and characters that awaited us. There’s an enchanting mystery about these unexplored realms and the memorable personalities we were introduced to. Certain films from our childhood have left lasting impressions on us, ones we cherish and revisit to reminisce about treasured moments and dialogue. The emotions we experienced when first watching them remain etched in our memories. From the 2000s, there’s a wealth of unforgettable children’s movies – both animated and live-action – so let’s delve into some must-watch (or rewatch) classics!
The Harry Potter series (2001 – 2011)
The enchanting Harry Potter series, with its captivating tales, stands out as some of the most cherished children’s films in our memory bank. Although appealing to audiences of all ages, particularly its later sequels, the world of Harry Potter is arguably the one that most people are familiar with. This narrative chronicles seven years of Harry Potter’s education at Hogwarts School of Magic, a place where we encounter various magical characters, including the central figure, Harry Potter himself.
Harry, along with his close companions and mentors, embarks on a variety of thrilling, occasionally perilous journeys that capture our hearts both in books and later on screen. This is a kids’ film that holds an appealing allure for adults as well, particularly those who were young or adolescent when the initial movie, “The Philosopher’s Stone,” debuted.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

In another film adaptation, the captivating tale of “The Chronicles of Narnia” transports us into an extraordinary world that we yearned to enter alongside Lucy. Filled with enchanting beings and creatures, this fantastical realm is a dreamland for children whose minds are brimming with creativity and wonder.
As I ventured into the enchanting realm of Narnia on my own initially, I was later joined by my siblings for an unforgettable journey. We interacted with magical creatures, encountered a malevolent white witch and a benevolent lion, soon learning that our fate was intertwined with saving this kingdom from impending darkness. The epic tale continues in the subsequent installments of the trilogy: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
School of Rock (2003)

In a different take, Jack Black played the role of a substitute teacher who has never completed anything, not even formal education in teaching. Mistakingly answering a call intended for his roommate, he poses as a music instructor at a posh private school, under the pretense of Dewey Finn – a man with a bleak future and questionable lifestyle, but an exceptional knowledge of music. In the end, this unconventional teacher finds enlightenment and develops innovative teaching methods.
Although such a scenario might not materialize in reality, and a character like Dewey would eventually be found, this film serves as an escape, allowing us to dream about the countless professions we’ve always desired. It is humorous, rich with musical allusions, sprinkled with intelligent witticisms, and boasts exceptional tunes, making it a delight for both children and adults alike, a must-see for everyone.
Cars (2006)

The animated series “Cars” imparts valuable lessons to kids, including the significance of perseverance, the power of friendship, and being a source of encouragement. It follows the journey of a self-assured and victorious race car named Lightning McQueen as he heads towards a competition in California.
Initially causing harm to the quaint car-populated town of Radiator Springs by damaging its roads, he is compelled to remain there to mend them. At first, he finds it difficult to adapt to this welcoming car society, but gradually comes to appreciate the essence of genuine friendship and affection.
Freaky Friday (2003)

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, I was captivated by Lindsay Lohan’s stardom, and this movie of hers is a standout. It’s a riotously funny reinterpretation that reminds us all to pause before we leap into action and let our tempers cool down. The strained relationship between Anna Coleman and her mother Tess has always been tense, with misunderstandings abounding.
On a heated Thursday evening at a Chinese eatery, we found ourselves locked in a disagreement. Little did we know that our argument was about to take an unexpected twist as we both received fortune cookies from the restaurant’s owner’s mother the next morning. The following day broke with a startling surprise: we had swapped bodies! Navigating through each other’s unique personalities became a challenge, but it presented a golden opportunity for us to delve deeper into one another’s minds and, ultimately, foster mutual understanding.
Finding Nemo (2003)

One of the most cherished and visually stunning animated series ever made, this story beautifully explores themes of love and camaraderie. When his son is taken captive and transported to Sydney, a timid clownfish named Marlin embarks on a journey away from home in search of him. Along the way, he encounters various underwater creatures who mysteriously guide him towards his goal.
Simultaneously in Sydney, Nemo finds himself imprisoned within a large aquarium, plotting an exciting escape alongside his fellow captives. Join us as we embark on an unforgettable journey, filled with laughter at some peculiar instances and tears at others. This animated series is home to one of the most iconic supporting characters – a fish named Dori who suffers from memory lapses, leading to amusing predicaments.
Elf (2003)

Funny man Will Ferrell is best recognized for his parodies and physical comedies laced with adult humor and sometimes inappropriate content. However, his role in “Elf” sets him apart, as this film appeals to audiences of all ages.
Originally abandoned at an orphanage, Buddy somehow wound up in Santa’s satchel and was brought to the North Pole, where he was nurtured by elves. Now a fully grown man, Buddy yearns to discover his biological father, leading him on a journey to bustling New York City. Join him as he experiences comedic escapades while searching for his less-than-endearing dad.
Spirited Away (2001)

Choosing a Japanese cartoon that children didn’t appreciate is quite challenging; however, Spirited Away stands out in numerous ways. It narrates the journey of a young girl with a significant task. When Chihiro and her parents got lost on their way to a new home, they stumbled upon an amusement park where things were not as they appeared.
In a strange twist of events, Chihiro’s parents have been transformed into pigs, and there’s a real danger they could be stuck there forever. This courageous girl must act fast to rescue them before time runs out. With the aid of a newfound friend, Chihiro faces numerous challenges to break free from this terrifying ordeal.
Up (2009)

This captivating animated series is undeniably one that can be enjoyed multiple times. It narrates a heartwarming tale of a friendship between Carl Fredricksen, an elderly man with dreams of exploring South America, and a spirited boy scout named Russell who helps him realize his dream.
This journey, reminiscent of the time Russell hoisted Carl’s home aloft using a thousand balloons, marking the start of their extraordinary adventure, is one for the books. It is teeming with fresh and intriguing companions, yet harbors wicked intentions from malevolent individuals. However, Carl is about to confront an unsettling revelation.
WALL-E (2008)

As a devoted admirer, let me share my thoughts about this captivating animated tale that promises fun and learning for all ages. This enchanting narrative unfolds in a not-so-distant future where humanity has vacated Earth due to its suffocation by waste, making it an inhospitable place to reside. Our protagonist is none other than WALL-E, an ingenious robot tasked with the arduous job of sorting through trash.
This heartwarming adventure not only delights our senses but also imparts profound lessons about environmental responsibility and the importance of preserving our precious planet for future generations. If you’re seeking a tale that strikes the perfect balance between entertainment and education, look no further than WALL-E!
He encounters EVE, another robot dispatched to Earth to determine if any life forms remain. However, he develops feelings for her and before long, finds himself embarking on a mission that could potentially endanger him, yet it may also prove to be the most enchanting and significant experience of his existence.
The Incredibles (2004)

In this vibrant cartoon series, it’s essential viewing for everyone as it follows an extraordinary family, where Bob and his wife Helen are none other than the world’s top superheroes, constantly battling crime. After 15 years of service, they were compelled to step down and settle into a quiet suburban life with their three kids, experiencing everyday life after years of extraordinary adventures.
Ever loyal to their authentic identity and driven by a persistent desire to advance in their career, Bob eventually receives an opportunity when he is called to a secluded island for a clandestine mission. Despite the task requiring more than just two individuals, this won’t pose a challenge, as their children possess extraordinary abilities.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

In a reimagining of Roald Dahl’s beloved classic, we follow the adventures of five lucky children granted access to Willy Wonka’s extraordinary chocolate factory. As owner of this sugary domain, Wonka selects these five children through golden tickets hidden in his candy bars. Among them is Charlie, who anticipates an unforgettable experience. However, things may not turn out as he expected…
Once they step into the factory, an array of peculiar events unfold, and it seems like nothing adheres to schedule at this peculiar facility. The director Tim Burton, Johnny Depp portraying Willy Wonka, and Freddie Highmore as Charlie are chiefly why we find ourselves eager to rewatch this film multiple times.
Ice Age (2002)

This animated film has achieved iconic status and is currently among the most beloved by children. It’s both amusing and clever, consistently bringing joy to our expressions. Packed with memorable characters and thrilling escapades, this movie takes place during the Ice Age and follows a band of budding companions who must reunite a human baby with its father.
As they journey along, they face a variety of potentially hazardous circumstances and unexpected wildlife encounters. Yet, what truly matters is the realization of the significance of genuine companionship and discovering that aid can emerge from the most unlikely sources.
Ratatouille (2007)

One might find it surprising that a story about a rodent culinary mastermind would exist, but in the realm of animated films, anything can happen. This particular film, created within the last two decades, is among our favorites to revisit. The protagonist, Remy, is a rat who harbors an ambition to be a French chef, defying all odds. However, destiny has a peculiar way of revealing itself, and in this case, it landed Remy in the sewers beneath one of Paris’ most esteemed restaurants.
In a turn of events, Remy finds himself face to face with his idol in the culinary world, quickly earning a crucial role as an assistant. However, due to the unpopularity of mice in kitchens, he has to maintain an invisible presence – his existence and assistance must be kept secret.
Shrek (2001)

In this comic strip, we find the main character, Shrek – a jovial ogre with a green hue, who uncovers that his swamp is now populated by various fairy tale creatures, all thanks to Lord Farquad’s scheming. Annoyed by this revelation, Shrek decides to confront Farquad in person, hoping to reclaim his swamp. Alongside a boisterous monkey companion, Shrek strikes a bargain with Farquad and embarks on an extended expedition.
This version maintains the original’s flow while using more natural language and providing a clearer narrative for readers.
As a devoted cinephile, I’d rephrase it like this: To regain his swamp, I found myself on a mission to save Princess Fiona, who was under the spell of awaiting her true love, imprisoned in a tower by a fiery dragon. The rescue went smoothly, but on our return journey, an unexpected development unfolded – I began to harbor feelings for Fiona, unbeknownst to me that she concealed a profound secret.
Monsters, Inc. (2001)

One unique cartoon from the 2000s, titled Monsters, Inc., introduces us to the tale of Sulley and Mike, two inseparable companions residing in a city devoid of humans, known as Monstropolis. Their profession involves them as skilled scarers, venturing into children’s bedrooms to instill nightmares, which generates energy for their metropolis.
For these creatures, young children like Boo pose a significant threat, and they may encounter grave peril if a 2-year-old inadvertently wanders into their realm. Sulley and Mike must devise a strategy to get Boo back to her room before the two most formidable adversaries become aware of the situation.
Enchanted (2007)

In a unique twist, what occurs when a storybook character is transported into the physical world? Take the enchanting Giselle, for instance, who was unceremoniously exiled from her fantastical, musical realm by the wicked Queen Narissa and ended up in bustling New York City.
Overwhelmed and taken aback by contemporary life’s complexities, bereft of cheerful conclusions and individuals who don’t find solace in song when they wish to convey their emotions, Giselle persistently endeavors to instill a touch of enchantment into the town and its inhabitants. Upon developing feelings for an alluring divorce attorney, she will begin to ponder the genuine distinctions between her realm and the one she has now entered.
The Princess and the Frog (2009)

In this contemporary twist on the classic tale “The Frog Prince,” we find Prince Naveen – a man of excessive pride and self-absorption. Transformed into a frog by a voodoo sorcerer, he encounters Tiana, an ambitious waitress with dreams of owning her very own restaurant. To restore Naveen to his human form, Tiana embarks on a journey, but finds herself confronting the same predicament after she gives him a kiss – a challenge they must overcome together.
In this animated series, the atmosphere is both brooding and enigmatic, boasting an evocative soundtrack and a cast of characters that stand out vividly (a jazz-playing alligator, a luminous firefly from Cajun lands, and a visually impaired woman residing in a tree-bound boat), all lending aid to Naveen and Tiana on their quest.
The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

Moving to the dilapidated Spiderwick Estate with their mom, Helen, the twin boys Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves drawn into a hidden realm populated by fairies and various magical beings.
Daily occurrences of mysterious incidents, including vanishings and accidents, have left people puzzled, and suspicions fall upon Jared. However, when he chooses to delve into the mystery with his siblings’ assistance, they uncover a stunning secret hidden within this estate, as well as the enigmatic beings that inhabit it.
Kung Fu Panda (2008)

A tale about a band of companions who find themselves in a predicament where their actions could make all the difference. In this story, a laid-back panda named Po gets picked for an old prophecy and sees his dream come true as he dives into the world of martial arts.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m about to stand beside my heroes, the iconic Furious Five. But soon, it’ll be on me to protect them all from the menacing snow leopard that’s barreling towards us. Now, it’s Po’s turn to unveil his hidden prowess and transform dreams into reality. This animated tale demonstrates how our greatest vulnerabilities can unexpectedly become our most powerful assets.
Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

This touching yet sorrowful tale about the challenges some adolescents encounter during their upbringing is highly recommended for viewing. Jess Aarons, growing up in rural Redneck surroundings, grapples with financial hardships, three boastful sisters, and a younger sibling to care for. He forms an alliance with Leslie Burke, a novel classmate and neighbor who assists him in navigating these trials.
In a self-created realm called Terabithia, they escape reality and assume identities of their choice, leaving behind their daily troubles. At last, Jesse finds joy, but eventually, heartbreak intervenes, plunging him back into sadness and desolation.
Nanny McPhee (2005)

Nanny McPhee, unlike Mary Poppins, isn’t your typical nanny, but she certainly offers an intriguing twist on the role. She possesses magical abilities to manage the household’s unruly children, set in Victorian England during the 19th century. Cedric Brown, a weary widower and undertaker, finds himself struggling with seven boisterous kids and seeks assistance from this unique nanny.
Having been through far too many nannies who’ve promptly packed their bags and left, Nanny McPhee undeniably fits the bill I’ve been longing for. Far from being a charming charmer, she appears to be the stern, no-nonsense type that just might be what this household needs.
Night at the Museum (2006)

A film suitable for all ages, although children may find it particularly captivating. It’s likely they’ll rewatch it multiple times due to its gripping adventure plot featuring intriguing characters who must safeguard the museum from burglars. Initially a down-on-his-luck individual, Larry Daley, finds employment as a night security guard at New York’s Museum of Natural History. Despite being jobless, divorced, and generally discontent, he takes on this role.
Straight away, he understands that things aren’t what they appear in that place. Every evening, an ancient Egyptian artifact breathes life into statues, and figures from history govern the museum until morning. When the crooks attempt a break-in at the museum, Larry will require assistance from his peculiar companions to prevent them from making off with this enchanted stone.
The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)

In a self-centered move, Emperor Kuzco, known for his arrogance, decides to construct a personal water park as a birthday gift to himself, following his dismissal of an administrator whom he suspected. This construction project, however, requires the demolition of one of the villages within his kingdom. Simultaneously, the dismissed administrator, Yzma, hatches a plot for retaliation and plots to seize the throne.
However, everything takes an unexpected turn when Kuzco is mysteriously turned into a llama. Now, he belongs to Pacha, whose home is among those slated for demolition to make way for Kuzco’s water park. Yet, once Pacha uncovers his royal identity, they agree to assist one another. Kuzco yearns to reclaim his throne, and in return, Pacha seeks a pledge from him to relocate the water park.
Corpse Bride (2005)

Tim Burton’s films consistently offer unique and unforgettable experiences that deviate from typical tales. In this instance, we encounter an unusual and captivating animated piece that leaves a lasting impression. The story unfolds in Victorian England during the 1800s, where Victoria and Victor are preparing for their wedding. However, after a disastrous wedding rehearsal, Victor retreats to the woods to practice his wedding vows.
In the end, he finds himself wed to Emily, the so-called Corpse Bride, while Victor is transported into a realm inhabited by skeletons and deceased creatures. Meanwhile, in the ordinary world, there emerges another potential partner who seeks to replace Victor. The decision now lies with Victor: should he remain with the one he came to cherish deeply or return to his everyday life, upholding family duties and preserving their reputation.
Spy Kids (2001)

The movie’s plot heavily revolves around kids, making it an ideal watch for them, possibly sparking dreams of becoming spies. Gregorio and Ingrid, two exceptional secret agents who have had a long career filled with adventures and peril, now lead a peaceful family life. However, when their old comrades and skilled operatives mysteriously vanish, they are compelled to rekindle their past identities.
In a turn of events, they’re compelled to confront Fegan Floop and his wicked companion, Minion. However, they mysteriously vanish as well, leaving only their children as the potential rescuers for them and their companions.
Coraline (2009)

As a supporter, I’d say: This isn’t exactly a cartoon for the tiniest tots, but Coraline is a movie that older kids and teenagers would undoubtedly find captivating. Coraline is a sprightly young girl who finds herself in a rather old house, feeling somewhat neglected by her parents. One fateful night, she discovers a secret passageway that opens up to an alternate world, where the inhabitants appear strikingly different from her everyday life.
In a peculiar twist, every being sports buttons where their eyes should be, and they are nurtured by loving and attentive parents who fulfill all of their heart’s desires. However, Coraline eventually discerns that this scenario is an illusion and sets out to free herself from a world intent on trapping her forever.
Flushed Away (2006)

In simpler terms, Roddy is a pet mouse living comfortably in an affluent apartment in Kensington, while Sid is a street-smart sewer rat. One day, Sid emerges from Roddy’s sink and quickly realizes his predicament. Roddy, wanting to get rid of him, tries to flush Sid down the toilet, but Sid manages to outwit Roddy, leading instead to Roddy ending up in the London sewers.
Roddy finds himself surrounded by various animals, all of whom are trying to avoid a detested Toad who despises rodents of every kind and aims to freeze them. The Toad has sinister plans if his underlings fail in their attempts, and now it’s up to Roddy to attempt an escape and save himself and his friends from the same chilling fate.

However, RJ remains oblivious to the fact that a woman has just brought in an exterminator to eliminate whatever they are dealing with. In his struggle to evade this situation, RJ will uncover several truths he was previously detached from, and most significantly, the true essence of family.
Madagascar (2005)

In zoos, animals often don’t appear content, and one such animal, a zebra named Marty from Central Park Zoo, yearned for freedom. Tired of his confined life, he made the decision to break free, dreaming of the expansive plains of Africa. Accompanied by his closest companions, lion Alex, giraffe Melman, and hippo Gloria, Marty embarked on an unexpected journey that led them to a ship bound for a wildlife sanctuary.
Eventually, they find themselves on the island of Madagascar, a long-held dream for Marty. However, now he and his companions must confront reality and understand what it truly means to live as genuine wildlife.
Happy Feet (2006)

This tale offers a unique perspective into the realm of penguins, as seen from Mumble’s viewpoint, who lacks the most prominent penguin skill – singing. Instead, he excels at tap dancing, which causes some strife within his family. Although they are not deeply disheartened by it, his parents understand that without a “Heartsong,” he might struggle to find true love.
Sadly, Mumble doesn’t fit in and is eventually excluded by the community. Far from his familiar surroundings, he encounters a band of Emperor penguins who warmly accept him. Along this journey with them, Mumble will discover numerous novelties and, most significantly, understand the essence of friendship.
Chicken Run (2000)

In a creatively animated narrative, I find myself embodying one of many farm animals who’ve grown accustomed to the daily struggles against human dominance – repression and captivity being our norm. However, we’re no longer content with our fate as prisoners. We stand up against the tyranny of Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy, choosing rebellion over subjugation.
Guided by the leadership of Rocky, a rooster, and Ginger, a courageous chicken, these feathered friends are making a daring bid for freedom from the perilous clutches of the farmers and their dismal farmyard. This film is not only clever, amusing, but also remarkably bold, making it a must-see that we’ll likely revisit multiple times.
Lilo & Stitch (2002)

A genetic experiment conducted at a distant location resulted in the creation of a hostile creature with a unique vulnerability – it cannot swim due to its dense physique. After the scientist was incarcerated, this being was also bound for a prison asteroid. However, it managed to break free and somehow found itself on Earth.
In this place, things might grow riskier, yet it’s taken under Lilo’s wing, a young girl who treats it like a pet dog. This unexpected change in Stitch’s circumstances significantly alters Lilo’s life and that of her family, in ways they never anticipated. However, the fact that this was an experiment gone awry needs to be communicated to the distant Grand Councilwoman.
Surf’s Up (2007)

In a comedic documentary-style, this animated series narrates the tale of a teenage penguin named Cody, who’s gearing up for the world’s largest penguin surfing contest. The event holds special significance as it celebrates his surfing hero, Big Z. With unwavering determination to emerge victorious, Cody faces an arduous challenge. The waves on Pen Gu island differ greatly from those in his hometown of Shiverpool, Antarctica and the competition proves tough.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’d put it this way: In the heart of my narrative, my protagonist, Cody, finds himself in a tough battle to emerge victorious on this island. Along the way, he picks up profound life and surfing lessons, thanks in part to his unlikely ally, Geek – an experienced surfer who’s seen better days.
Brother Bear (2003)

Kenai, formerly a man, harbors a deep-seated animosity towards bears due to a vicious altercation that claimed the life of his brother and transformed him into a bear. To gain new insights, he embarks on this transformation. Later, he receives a visit from the spirit of his deceased older brother who advises him to journey to where the celestial lights touch the ground if he wishes to restore his human form.
As he travels along, he encounters diverse creatures, and gradually discovers a fondness for living as a bear. He begins to perceive humans as potentially harmful compared to any other animal. A choice looms ahead, one that will irrevocably alter the course of his existence.
