55-year-old Ben Rathbun, recognized for his role on the reality TV series 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, sadly passed away at his home in Greencastle, Indiana, on May 19. His family was by his side during his final moments. Last year, Rathbun had been bravely battling stage 4 stomach cancer, a battle he fought until its conclusion.
In the fifth season of Before the 90 Days, Ben Rathbun emerged as a recognized figure among 90 Day Fiancé viewers. At that point, he was a 52-year-old father of four. The narrative revolved around his digital romance with Mahogany Roca, a 22-year-old woman from Peru. The series chronicles couples who connect online and submit an application for a K-1 visa, which allows them to marry within 90 days after arriving in the U.S.
At first, both some spectators and even members of his family harbored concerns that Mahogany could potentially be catfishing him. This was due to the fact that she declined video calls, arousing suspicion among fans.
In spite of initial uncertainties, the couple eventually joined in marriage in Peru. Rathbun expressed on the spinoff 90 Day Diaries in February 2024, “Our civil ceremony was simply remarkable; I couldn’t help but be amazed by its beauty.” He further mentioned, “However, we are still looking forward to conducting a religious ceremony as well.
In the year 2022, Ben and Mahogany made their engagement official in a YouTube video, which was recorded during Rathbun’s visit to Peru. The two lovebirds were featured on 90 Day Diaries, where they disclosed that they had tied the knot several months prior.
As a dedicated follower, I openly share that I’ve been candid about the hurdles I’ve been navigating, which includes a challenging transition period. For approximately six months now, I’ve been jobless and this has led to an accumulation of bills, making things financially tight. I’m doing my utmost to manage these expenses and save for my upcoming trip to Peru. At the time of my passing, it was reported that my partner and I were still a united duo.
Besides the positive aspects of Ben Rathbun’s life, there were also some legal challenges. For instance, in 2020, he was apprehended for driving under the influence and operating a vehicle with a revoked license. As a result, he received a probation sentence that lasted until January 2021. In 2022, Rathbun failed to attend a scheduled probation violation hearing, leading to an arrest warrant being issued against him. Subsequently, he surrendered and spent one night in custody.
In an interview with In Touch, Rathbun admitted that he was responsible for missing an appointment due to not receiving all necessary notices on time. By the time he discovered this, it was already too late. Consequently, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Without delay, he drove for 14 hours and surrendered himself to the court, spending one night in jail.
The news of Ben Rathbun’s passing was initially shared on the Instagram page shabootydotcom and later confirmed by TMZ. After being diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer towards the end of 2024, Rathbun endured a prolonged illness for several months. However, even in his final moments, he chose to be at home in Greencastle, Indiana, where he was surrounded by his cherished family and friends.
