Cannes Film Festival 2025: Jennifer Lawrence Says Mothers ‘Feel Like an Alien’ Postpartum, Talks About Her 2nd Kid’s Birth

During the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Jennifer Lawrence openly discussed her struggle with postpartum depression and its impact on her emotionally and artistically. In an interview while promoting her latest movie, Die My Love, Lawrence revealed, “I didn’t find anything quite like postpartum depression.

She remarked, ‘Being extremely isolating is fascinating when Lynne [Ramsay] transfers this couple to Montana. She lacks a community, lacks her kind. However, it’s important to note that severe anxiety and depression create isolation regardless of location. You often feel like an outsider.’

In the film “Die My Love,” the Academy Award-winning actress portrays Grace, a young mom grappling with intense postnatal mental illness. This movie is directed by Lynne Ramsay, as reported by Deadline. When she initially read the book, she found it to be both heart-wrenching and impactful. Ramsay described it as surreal. At that time, she had recently given birth for the first time. It was a painful experience. As a mother, she struggled to distinguish ‘what I would do’ from ‘what she would do,’ she shared.

Jennifer Lawrence expressed her years-long admiration for director Lynne Ramsay, sharing that she’d dreamed of collaborating with her since watching Ratcatcher. She initially found it hard to believe such an opportunity would come about, but they both decided to seize the moment and submit the project to Ramsay. To this day, securing the role continues to feel unreal to her.

Ramsay, recognized primarily for his work on “You Were Never Really Here,” made a return to Cannes for the seventh time with the movie “Die My Love.” This is one of the few films in the 2025 lineup that is still up for sale. While filming, Lawrence disclosed she was approximately five months pregnant and referred to her role as deeply personal.

The character’s path, it was revealed, is intertwined with issues of hormonal imbalance and a personal identity struggle, causing her to question her roles as a mother, spouse, and sensual individual. This character, according to her, is tormented by the sensation of fading away.

Currently a mom of two, Lawrence expressed that her children have drastically impacted her life on an emotional and professional level. “Having kids transforms everything. It can be brutal yet amazing. Every choice I make, whether it’s about work or when and where I work, is influenced by them. Moreover, my profession heavily involves emotions. They’ve shown me a whole new world,” she shared.

The actress even joked, “I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor.”
