Avowed’s arachnophobia update is giving players „meatballphobia”

In the latest version of Obsidian’s Avowed, arachnophobes can now traverse the Living Lands without worry, and all players can appreciate the humorous solution the developers have introduced. A new feature allows users to switch spiders on or off, replacing them with a floating, spiky orb wielding two swords instead. I chanced upon a video of this on social media and couldn’t help but chuckle. The official Avowed account posted a clip showcasing the new orb in action, as it swung its swords while hovering beside it.

Avowed’s new arachnophobia setting is an elegantly hilarious solution

Earlier this year, the highly anticipated game Avowed was released, and while it may not have stayed at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts, it was indeed an exceptional gaming experience. Our review praised Avowed for “raising the bar for Western RPGs.” Similar to the recently remastered Oblivion, Avowed is a role-playing game set in a fantasy world, which can be explored from either a first-person or third-person perspective. The combat is intense, and the game’s ability to immerse you in its richly detailed world makes even the sight of a large spider charging at you quite unsettling.

In a new environment, this peculiar orb is nothing short of ideal. Ordinarily, it might have blended inconspicuously, but here in the Living Lands, it seems entirely natural to find floating spiked orbs among the scenery. The same can be said for the hovering swords. While the orb could have simply charged forward to inflict damage, that would have been sufficient. Yet, this orb has transformed into a formidable adversary, brandishing not just spikes but also wielding telekinetic swords – a tactic so ingenious it’s making me eager to experience the game in this setting, despite my lack of arachnophobia.

Enthusiasts of the game Avowed enjoyed the video and shared their reactions. One individual posted, “Join us in playing Avowed, we’ve got some tasty meatballs!” while another simply responded, “BRO, what is this? Better than a spider!” This pretty much encapsulates my overall sentiments about the topic. However, it seems not everyone was pleased, as one user commented, “Thanks, but now I apparently have a fear of telepathic-sword-wielding meatballs…” Fortunately, there’s always the option to return to spiders. And let’s hope that “meatballphobia” was just a typo. If that meatball could read my thoughts, now that would be truly terrifying.

The latest news came with Obsidian’s 2025 update plan, revealing that upcoming features will roll out in stages. This summer anticipate the arrival of fresh, distinct weapons and armor. Fall brings Photo Mode and New Game Plus into play. Although there’s no announced DLC for _Avowed_ yet, I’m willing to be patient when such quality updates are on the horizon.
